Employees appointed to roles that are not affiliated with a union or association, with terms of employment governed by provincial legislation, and include positions like non-credit teachers, reader/demonstrators, and co-op students.

Non-classified appointments are appointments that are not affiliated with a Union or Association at the University of Calgary. Conditions of employment for these types of appointments are governed by provincial legislation.
The hiring process recognizes the following position categories:
Non-credit Teachers
Employees hired to teach not for credit courses at the university, typically in Continuing Education.
Reader/Demonstrators
Employees hired to support teaching activities such as marking or invigilating/proctoring exams.
Co-op Students
Includes students who are enrolled in a post-secondary program and are required to complete co-op component as part of program graduation.
Non-credit Teachers
Non-credit teachers are hired to teach not for credit courses, typically in continuing education. Non-credit teaching appointments are contract appointments, usually four months in duration, hired on an hourly or salaried basis via the Template-Based Hire form using the Reader Demonstrators/Non-Cred Teaching – Hourly or Reader Demonstrators/Non-Cred Teaching – Salaried template.
Reader/Demonstrators
Reader/Demonstrators are hired to support teaching activities such as marking or invigilating/proctoring exams. Can be hired on an hourly or salaried basis via the Template-Based Hire form using the Reader Demonstrators/Non-Cred Teaching – Hourly or Reader Demonstrators/Non-Cred Teaching – Salaried template.
Please note, graduate students of the University of Calgary may only be hired as Reader/Demonstrators if they are exclusively invigilating/proctoring exams.

Steps in the Non-Classified Hiring Process
This process outlines the key actions departments take to recruit, hire, and onboard non-classified employees, from selecting a candidate to getting them successfully started in their role.
Recruit for and Select Candidate
Departments are responsible for sourcing and selecting a suitable non-classified candidate, with job postings optional on the university’s career page and recruitment tailored to the specific role.
Make Offer to Candidate
Once a successful candidate is chosen, an offer outlining duties, compensation, and contract duration should be presented, and can only be accepted after confirming the candidate’s legal entitlement to work in Canada.
Submit a Template-Based Hire Form
Complete the required Template-Based Hire form to initiate approvals and HR processing.
Onboard New Employee
Once the new hire is in the system, managers receive confirmation and use onboarding resources to ensure the employee has necessary access, accounts, and information to begin their role effectively.
Step 1: Recruit for and Select Non-Classified Candidate
Recruiting a non-classified employee is the responsibility of the department hiring for the appointment. Job Profiles and posting through the university's career page is not required. However, optional posting through the careers page is available should you require assistance with sourcing candidates for these positions.

Step 2: Make Offer to Candidate
Once you have selected a successful candidate for your non-classified position an offer should be presented to the candidate. The terms and conditions of the appointment should be clearly outlined, including duties, compensation and duration of the contract. Offers can only be accepted once it has been determined that the candidate is legally entitled to work in Canada under the terms of the offer.
Step 3: Submit a Template-Based Hire Form
Non-Classified employees are hired through the online Template Based Hire (TBH) form. Use the appropriate guide below to hire or rehire.
Step 4: Onboard New Employee
Once the person and job record have been created in the Human Resources PeopleSoft system the new employee’s reporting manager will receive a confirmation email. The email will include appointment details and a link to the Onboarding page.
The manager's checklist should be used to help you ensure that your new employee is given an IT account, a university email address and other system access including additional PeopleSoft roles in both Finance and HR.
