Support Staff - Research (Project) Funded

Positions are paid through research funds and will have an anticipated end date (maximum 5 years).

Overview

Roles are paid through research funds and will have an anticipated end date (maximum 5 year initial term).

Full Time Equivalent (FTE) is equal to the number of hours a full-time employee works for the University of Calgary.  Depending on the role, 1.0 FTE could be 35 hours, 37.5 hours, or 40 hours.

Types of research (project) funded positions:


Fixed Term (salaried position)

Fixed Term Full-Time

This position is expected to work 1.0 FTE.

Definition: Employees who support research projects, Trustholders, or both, at the university for a specified period of up to five (5) years. May be renewed dependent upon length of research funding associated with the appointment.

    • 100% sick leave after three months

Vacation: Article FXT29 - AUPE Collective Agreement

  • Full Entitlement pro-rated based on length of term
    • 3 weeks for 1 to 4 years of service
    • 4 weeks for 5 to 15 years of service
    • 5 weeks for 16 to 24 years of service
    • 6 weeks for 25 years of service and over
    • One-time bonus week after 8 years
    • Accrues semi-monthly from date of hire

Fixed Term Part-Time

This position is expected to work less than 1.0 FTE, to a minimum of 0.4 FTE.

This position is engaged to work on an irregular schedule less than 1.0 FTE.

Definition: Employees who are engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule. Such employees may work shifts up to the normal daily and weekly hours of work for their job family.

Can be hired as Operating Employees (when paid from base operating funds) or as Fixed Term Employees when paid from research project funds)

Casual (hourly; maximum number of shifts)

Casual

This position is engaged to work an irregular schedule of shifts of three (3) hours or more to:

  • Replace an employee absent from work for a period of less than 20 consecutive work days.
  • Augment the regular work force on no more than 30 work days per calendar year.

Definition: Employees engaged to work shifts of three (3) hours or more to:

  • Replace an Employee absent from work for a period of less than twenty (20) consecutive work days (Replacement)
  • Augment the regular work force on no more than thirty (30) work days per calendar year (Augmentation). 

Can be hired as Operating Employees (when paid from general operating funds) or as Fixed Term Employees when paid from research project funds)

Student Job (hourly; current University of Calgary student)

Student Job

This position is engaged to work shifts no less than three (3) hours per shift, and no more than 22.5 hours per week during the fall and/or winter semester(s).

Student employees must be registered in one (1) University of Calgary course or more, or registered as a Graduate Student at the University of Calgary.

From May 1 to September 15 and December 1 to January 15, active Canadian students can work up to full-time hours.  International students may have different provisions.

Definition: Employees whose position duties fall in Phase I of a Job Family and are engaged to work no less than three (3) hours per shift, and no more than 22.5 hours per week.

Student Employees must be registered in one (1) University of Calgary course or more, or registered as a Graduate Student at the University of Calgary.

Can be hired as Operating Employees (when paid from general operating funds) or as Fixed Term Employees when paid from research project funds)
