Sick Leave
The Ability Management and Employee Well-Being Program is responsible for promoting employee well-being and supporting employees whose health, injury, disability, or medical circumstances may impact their ability to work.
We have partnered with TELUS Health to enhance support for employees experiencing extended illness or injury. Through this partnership, faculty and staff can access specialized disability and absence management services designed to promote recovery, well-being, and successful return-to-work outcomes.
Sick Leave Process
Appropriate medical documentation is required to support an employee's leave, facilitate access to benefits, and guide the development of individualized workplace supports and return-to-work plans that promote recovery and success at work.
If you are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness or injury, notify your supervisor (Dean, Department Head or Manager, as applicable) as soon as possible.
If your absence lasts more than five consecutive workdays, contact Ability Management and copy (cc) your supervisor (Dean, Department Head or Manager, as applicable).
If your injury or illness is work-related, it must be reported to the Workers' Compensation Board, and an OARS Report must be completed.
When Ability Management receives notification of your absence, a referral may be made to TELUS Health to support your leave and recovery.
TELUS Health will contact you within one to two business days and provide a medical package for your healthcare provider to complete. Medical documentation is typically required within 10 business days of the start of your absence, unless an alternate timeline has been arranged. Depending on your situation, additional information may be requested during your leave.
TELUS Health works with you, your healthcare provider, and Ability Management to support your recovery and help plan a safe and sustainable return to work. This may include providing recommendations regarding absence management, expected recovery timelines, functional abilities, and workplace accommodations to help ensure a safe and sustainable return to work.
While you're away from work, it's important to stay in touch with the people supporting your leave and recovery.
- Keep your supervisor (Dean, Department Head or Manager, as applicable) informed about your leave status.
- Stay connected with your TELUS Health Case Manager and let them know about any changes that may affect your recovery, return-to-work plans, or travel.
If an illness or injury prevents you from taking pre-approved vacation, you are responsible for cancelling or rescheduling your plans as needed. You can view your sick leave balance through Report time in the my.ucalgary.ca portal.
If you have questions, your supervisor (Dean, Department Head or Manager, as applicable), TELUS Health Case Manager, and Ability Management are available to support you.
When you're ready to return to work, Ability Management, TELUS Health, and your supervisor (Dean, Department Head or Manager, as applicable) will work with you to support a safe and successful transition back to work.
TELUS Health will review the medical information provided by your healthcare provider and advise Ability Management when you are medically cleared to return to work, including any restrictions or accommodations that may be needed.
If you're unable to return to work because of an ongoing medical condition, additional supports may be available, including Long Term Disability (LTD) benefits. If an LTD application is required, TELUS Health and Ability Management will guide you through the process and help answer any questions along the way.
