Residence Options for Winter 2022

The University of Calgary is extending online classes until the end of Feb. 19, with a return to in-person classes after Reading Week, beginning on Feb. 28, 2022.

With the announcement of classes continuing online until February 28, 2022, you may be wondering if you can continue to stay in residence or vacate residence early. Residence Services has four options for residents for the remaining Winter 2022 term.

All forms closed on January 31.

Residents can continue to live in residence and will be required to pay their residence fees by Friday, January 28, 2022.  

Residents that wish to vacate residence for the Winter 2022 term may do so by filling out a vacating notice by January 31, 2022. Vacating notices can be found on the Forms tab in the Resident Portal.

  • Residents that fill out a vacating request form and vacate their residence room prior to January 31, 2022 will not be charged for the month of January.
  • Winter 2022 5-day and 7-day All You Care To Eat meal plan fees will be charged up to the last date used, if used in 2022.
  • 120 and 250 swipe plan holders will be able to roll over unused swipes to the 2022/2023 academic year. Those that are not returning to the University will be able to request a refund of the unused swipes by contacting unicardfinancial@ucalgary.ca
  • Residents that vacate between February 1 and 28 will have their residence fees and meal plan pro-rated up to the date they vacate. 
  • Residents, that vacate due to online classes will be required to vacate prior to February 28, 2022. 
  • Starting February 1, 2022 vacating requests due to online classes will only be approved for class schedules that move to online teaching for the entire Winter 2022 term. Proof of online classes will be required for these vacating requests. Any classes that move online for the entire Winter 2022 term will be announced prior to February 28. Therefore, vacating residence for online classes will only be approved until March 1.

Students who submit requests by Wednesday, Jan. 26 will see the reversed fees reflected on their account by the end of the month.

Requests submitted after Wednesday, Jan. 26 will still be reversed and may take a week to two weeks to show up on their account.

Residents that have not returned from the Winter break, have the option to return to their room during reading week and pay for remainder of their stay in residence.

  • Winter 2022 fees will be charged from the date the resident picks up their new key from the Campus Service Centre
  • 5-day and 7-day meal plans will be fees will be charged starting the date that residents check-in. Any meal plans used in January will be charged up to the last date used. These charges will be added when the resident checks back in, in February.  
  • Residents keys will be disabled and will not have access to their unit until reading week
  • Residents will not have access to their unit until they pick up their new key at the Campus Service Centre.
  • Request to return to residence must be completed by January 31, 2022

Winter term fees will be reversed from your account and may take up to two weeks to be reflected on your account.

Pro-rated fees for the remaining Winter term will be posted on the day you move in after reading week. You will have seven business days, from the day you move in, to pay your residence fees.

Residents that have not returned from the Winter break, wish to vacate and are unable to return to residence to pack up their belongings, can request Residence Services to pack their belongings.

Residence Services will pack up personal belongings and place into a storage unit(s). Items will be kept in the storage unit, until they are able to be picked up in the summer or until the resident returns for the Fall 2022 term. 

  • Winter term 2022 residence fees will be reversed on the account
  • Winter 2022 5-day and 7-day All You Care To Eat meal plan fees will be charged up to the last date used, if used in 2022.
  • 120 and 250 swipe plan holders will be able to roll over unused swipes to the 2022/2023 academic year. Those that are not returning to the University will be able to request a refund of the unused swipes by contacting unicardfinancial@ucalgary.ca
  • $250 administrative fee for packing up items
  • $100 storage fee
  • Residents will be responsible for any cleaning charges for the condition of their room
  • Residence Services is not responsible for any damaged or missing items 
  • Not returning to residence form must be completed by January 31, 2022
