Biography

Zian graduated from Rajuk Uttara Model College in Dhaka, Bangladesh. While there she co-founded reGrow, a youth-led non-profit organization that fosters stray animals, plants trees in the community, and upholds hygiene standards on the streets. She was also the Finance and Logistics Secretary of her school’s Earth and Nature Club, playing a crucial role in creating the budget, monitoring finances, and attending sponsor meetings. Additionally, she enlisted in the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps to experience military life and gain more discipline.

Zian chose UCalgary because she was confident that the unique engineering program would help channel her strengths and potential toward her goal of becoming an accomplished engineer. The world-class faculty, enriching curriculum, and additional resources offered help her develop a unique perspective by bridging the gap between theory and real-world experience. She was also drawn to UCalgary’s encouragement for women in STEM.

Zian is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science – Engineering program. She chose engineering because she has always been fascinated by the planning, design, and troubleshooting that is involved in building things.

Zian sees herself becoming a competent engineer and working at a reputable engineering company. She also envisions herself founding a startup at some point in her career.

For Zian, the Prestige Award feels like a recognition of her achievements, and it motivates her to strive even harder. The monetary value is also helping her budget for her education.
