Seymour Schulich Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarship for Calgary Area Residents

Biography
I graduated from William Aberhart High School in Calgary, Alberta, where I cultivated a strong passion for technology and programming. As the captain of my high school robotics team, I led a talented group of students in designing and programming autonomous robots for city-wide competitions, reaching finals and winning awards for Innovation and Design. This role was a major contributor to my leadership and problem-solving skills, teaching me the value of collaboration, iteration, and resilience in the face of complex engineering challenges. Robotics was more than just an extracurricular for me—it was the perfect intersection of my love for computer science, software development, and engineering. Academically, I was dedicated to excellence, earning the most academic awards at my school in grades 11 and 12 with an overall average of 99%. Throughout high school, I competed in various science competitions and earned the National Biology Scholar title from the University of Toronto, ranking in the top 2% nationwide. This experience, combined with my studies in biology, fueled my passion for integrating software and biology to drive healthcare innovation. Beyond academics, I dedicated my time to giving back to the community. As a volunteer at the Calgary Public Library and the Telus Spark Science Centre, I shared my enthusiasm for science and technology with younger students. Additionally, working as a recreational leader for my city allowed me to engage with youth in creative and meaningful ways, fostering teamwork and curiosity in STEM fields.
My passion for programming and problem-solving has led me to pursue a degree in Software Engineering, where I can develop the skills needed to create impactful technologies in the real world. I have always been fascinated by how software can drive innovation, and I am particularly excited to learn how to design, optimize, and implement complex systems using AI, machine learning, and advanced computing techniques. This degree will equip me with the technical and practical knowledge necessary to bring my ideas to life and contribute to cutting-edge advancements. I chose UCalgary for its renowned research opportunities, extensive engineering program, and the flexibility it offers to explore interdisciplinary fields and push the boundaries of innovation. In terms of research, I am particularly interested in AI and deep learning, especially their applications in healthcare and biomedical solutions. I hope to explore how intelligent systems can enhance medical diagnostics, personalized treatments, and bioinformatics, bridging software with healthcare innovation. Through my undergraduate experience, I aim to gain hands-on experience, refine my technical expertise, and develop solutions that make a meaningful impact on society.
I aspire to build a career as a software engineer, focusing on developing innovative and impactful technology. I am particularly interested in how software can be applied to healthcare and biomedicine, creating solutions that improve medical diagnostics, treatment, and research. After graduation, I hope to work in the AI/ML industry, applying my expertise to biomedical advancements that improve patient care and medical research. Whether through startups, research labs, or tech-driven healthcare companies, my goal is to contribute to cutting-edge solutions that have a lasting impact on healthcare and society.
