Biography

Gillian is enrolled in the engineering program. She chose this field because she has always enjoyed solving problems and been fascinated by the maths and sciences. She believes it will provide her with the tools to aid in solving important and complex world issues. She hopes that wherever her degree lands her, she will be an active contributor to the process of finding new solutions that have the potential of improving lives.

Gillian had graduated from Bishop Carroll High School. During her high school years, her top three achievements were recruiting a team to participate in the Technovation app and business development competition in Grade 10, of which she was designated the CEO, and which led to an interview in French on Radio-Canada, being awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal - Bronze level upon graduating high school, and playing the violin at over 100 performances for a wide variety of audiences every year with the Calgary Fiddlers, which allowed her to gain an abundance of unique and impactful life experiences.

She was drawn to the University of Calgary’s engineering program because of the invaluable experiences it offers, namely the year-long Internship program, which she hopes to participate in. Combined with its increasingly important status as a top research university in Canada and its Engineering major and minor offerings, it was the top choice for her. She was further encouraged to attend the UCalgary because of its frequent communication and the ease with which she was able to get her questions answered. Many of her fears about beginning her postsecondary journey were quelled long before her first semester began.

Her Prestige Award will give her time to seek opportunities to gain hands-on experiences vital to well-rounded engineers through clubs/extracurriculars, while maintaining a good academic standing, without the stress of a large financial burden.
