Annual Campus-Wide Evacuation Drills

Building evacuation drills are not just a regulatory requirement; they are an essential part to help create a safe campus environment.

By participating in these drills, responders, building occupants, and the Emergency Management team can prepare for emergencies. It’s a chance to learn how to safely and quickly exit buildings on campus, ensuring that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.

The next annual evacuation drills will take place in September 2025. Plan for a fifteen-minute disruption to your daily activities if you work, teach, or study in a building scheduled to be evacuated.

What to do

  • Learn where the fire pull stations and fire extinguishers are located.
  • Know which ways to get out of a building and where to meet up after you evacuate.
  • Always leave a building during a drill or real alarm.*
  • Close, but do no lock doors to rooms that are in alarm.
  • Stay out of a building if the alarm is sounding.
  • Go to your assembly point.

*Refusal to evacuate is a safety violation subject to non-academic disciplinary protocols.

  • Only go back inside when Campus Security or the Calgary Fire Department gives the all-clear at the assembly point or over the PA system.
  • If needed, debrief and talk about what went well and what could be better, then email Emergency Management with your feedback.

Responsibilities

Follow all evacuation protocols above.

Assembly Points versus Muster Points

Assembly points are designated areas where people should go during a campus evacuation. Each building has its own assembly point, offering shelter, access to washrooms and food, and a place to receive important updates from Campus Security about the situation. While it's not mandatory to go to an assembly point, doing so is strongly encouraged to stay informed and safe. Campus Security will let you know when it's safe to return to the building from this location.

Muster points are similar to assembly points but have stricter rules. Attending a muster point is mandatory, and a headcount is taken to make sure everyone is accounted for. These points are typically used by facilities that require attendance tracking, such as childcare centres. Unlike assembly points, which are for general use, muster points are required for specific buildings where safety protocols demand documented attendance.
