Academic Advisors for Study Abroad

Before applying to study abroad

Before applying, you must ask your academic advisor about:

How study abroad would fit into your degree. When you can go abroad in your degree, and if you want to go on multiple programs, making a plan for that with your advisor. What type and level of courses should you take abroad in order to meet your degree requirements.

Once accepted to a program

You should then ask your academic advisor more specific course questions regarding transfer credit, like:

How might the courses you plan to take at your host university transfer back to UCalgary?

Once you return

It's recommended (but not required) to follow up with your academic advisor again following your return, to finalize credit transfer questions.

Tip: this also helps to speed up the transfer credit process!

Each program web page on our site (which can be found using the program finder) should include details about credit transfer, expected course load, and other general academic information like where to find courses. All pages should include:

  • how many credits on your program or at your host university are equal to a 3 unit (half course) at UCalgary
  • what the expected credits/courseload is for your host university or program
  • how to find courses offered at your host university or program. If you have questions about this, please contact the study abroad advisor listed at the bottom of the program web page.

If you are concerned about your GPA and eligibility, we want to support you! Please contact the study abroad advisor listed at the bottom of the program web page to talk about your concerns. We also strongly recommend using the free resources provided by the Student Success Centre on campus, located on the 3rd floor of TFDL. Speak with Academic Development Specialists, attend in-person or online seminars, or book 1-on-1 advising.
