UCalgary places a strong emphasis on partnerships with the global south. As one of the four most active U15 universities in global development activity, UCalgary has a rich history of engagement spanning over 30 years. All current projects are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on capacity building, knowledge sharing and mobilization.
2022 global development projects
Global Affairs Canada Scaling Up MamaToto for Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights in SW Uganda: This project aims to enhance sexual reproductive health and rights in southwest Uganda. The initiative builds upon Global Affairs Canada's investment of $18 million in related child and maternal health projects in East Africa since 2015. Project duration: 2020-2024.
World University Service Canada Student Refugee Program: UCalgary's Engineering department provides internal funds to support refugee students through this program. Project duration: 2021-2025.
Queen Elizabeth Scholars West Africa: Partnering for innovation in women-led social work and social science in West Africa, UCalgary hosts this project. Project duration: 2021-2024.
Queen Elizabeth Scholars Young Leaders in International Development: UCalgary is engaged in this project to support young leaders in the field of international development. Project duration: 2018-2022.
Canada's Global Skills Opportunity Program - Global Indigenous Skills: Ways of Knowing, Ways of Doing, Ways of Connecting, Ways of Being: This program connects Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to international learning opportunities that have an Indigenous focus. Project duration: 2021-2025.
Academics Without Borders: UCalgary is involved in four projects in partnership with institutions in Eswatini, India, Ecuador and Ghana. The university provides in-kind support in the form of academic time, volunteer time and travel support. Project duration: 2022.
Daughters for Life Scholarship: This scholarship supports female students from the Middle East. Project duration: 2019-2023.
Government of Canada Scholarship Program for Non-Canadians: UCalgary participates in this program, which supports non-Canadian students studying or conducting research for short or medium-term stays at the university. The program receives funding from a range of designated countries. Project duration: 2020-2022.
In addition to these projects, UCalgary continues to offer various programming initiatives including:
Virtual programs such as the Global Community Challenge YYC, a platform for students from low-income countries to collaborate with students from Calgary and around the world in solving shared challenges.
International Development Week, an annual event, engaging the UCalgary and local community through activities such as the World's Challenge Challenge student competition, Careers in Sustainability and International Development networking event, and the Global Development Speaker Series.
