With the high potential for intertwined goals and objectives for the research platforms ‘Synthesis and Visualization’ and ‘Analytics and Simulation’, the two have merged into ‘Analytics and Visualization’ in order to achieve the best possible results. The combined platforms will have a shared mandate and committee members.
Our society is overwhelmed by data and information. Advances in many disciplines, using both qualitative and quantitative data, are limited by our abilities to make sense of this data: analysis and visualization allow us to synthesize knowledge from data and simulations. Images transport meaning and are essential in a wide range of research areas. Data needs to be captured, analyzed, abstracted and visualized to create meaning that helps problem-solving and decision making.
The University of Calgary supports comprehensive, cross-discipline platforms on Synthesis and Visualization as well as Analysis and Simulation and arguably leads nationally in these areas. To drive the research agenda of both platforms forward, the Vice President (Research) created the Advisory Committee on Analytics and Visualization. The platform integrates the efforts of researchers from different domains including arts, natural sciences, computer sciences, medicine, engineering, architecture, nursing and kinesiology that work in areas with a high potential for cross-pollination.
