Professional Skill Development

Submitted by pbhyde on Fri, 12/18/2015 - 3:02pm

Current Postdocs

Developing your professional skills during your postdoctoral appointment will increase the value of your postdoc experience and help advance your career. Our professional development program guides you through the development of six core competencies that are critical to success in academia, industry, government, and non-governmental organizations.

Professional Development Planning

We recommend that all postdocs complete a professional development plan at the beginning of their appointment. This will give you insight into what your career goals are, and what professional skills you need to in order to achieve them.

We recommend the myIDP Individual Development Plan online tool for postdocs in scientific fields who wish to conduct a robust assessment of their skills, values, and interests in order to find the career path that is right for them.

For postdocs in other fields, and those looking for a condensed professional development planning tool, we offer our own professional development planning worksheet.

Making Collaboration and Group Work Work: A Workshop with Elizabeth Barkley

December 9 2016, 9am-12pm

Ample evidence points to collaborative learning as a powerful teaching and learning strategy to engage students at multiple levels, yet it is challenging to implement group work effectively. Join Elizabeth Barkley for a 3-hour workshop on collaborative learning and group work in which you'll learn to start with "intentional design," ensure the collaborators are indeed "co-laboring," and develop tasks that result in "meaningful learning" (Barkley, Cross, & Major, 2005 p. 4).
