 Eligible staff and faculty and their designated dependents qualify for the Tuition Support Program for approved undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as non-credit courses offered through Continuing Education.

Tuition Support Program Summary

Benefit based on Academic Year – July 1st – June 30th

NOTE: As per the University of Calgary Fee Chart, the maximum benefit for an undergraduate half-course is $538.59 and the maximum benefit for a graduate level course is $714.78 for the current academic year. Certain program course costs may exceed the amount listed in the fee chart. Applicants are responsible to pay the difference between the actual cost of the course and the benefit amount covered.

What Support is Available?

  • The Tuition Support program offers credit to eligible staff up to a maximum benefit amount based on the information in the University of Calgary Fee Chart per Academic year. For undergraduate courses the amount for a single course is denoted as "Canadian Student Tuition". For graduate courses the amount is denoted as "Course (except MBA)".

  • Individual courses may vary from the course fees listed on the University of Calgary Fee Chart. The staff member is responsible for any additional course costs over and above the course fee posted on the Fee Chart.

  • Tuition support covers the tuition fees only. It does not cover software, textbooks, general student fees or other costs that may be associated with a course or registration in a course.
  • Tuition support for part-time staff is prorated based the breakdown listed under "What is Covered" for each staff group.

Who is Eligible?

Support Staff and Management and Professional Staff

  • Regular, Fixed Term, and Limited Term appointments

  • Appointment must be greater than six months duration, and

  • Must be actively at work at course commencement date

NOTE: Recurring Part-time, Temporary Relief, Temporary Short Term, Project Short Term, Casual, and Student Employees are not eligible for Tuition Support.


Academic Staff and Senior Leadership Team

  • Regular, Continuing, Contingent Term and Limited Term

NOTE: Sessional, Term Certain appointments are not eligible for Tuition Support.

When am I Eligible?

Support Staff and Management and Professional Staff

  • After completion of six months of continuous service in a benefit eligible position. The start date of the course must be following the completion of the six month waiting period.

  • Staff member must be actively at work on the course commencement date.

  • Staff members are not eligible for tuition support if:
    a) staff member terminates prior to the start date of the course
    b) the start date of the course is prior to the completion of the 6 month
    waiting period
    c) staff member is not active at the start date of the course. This includes
    being on a leave without pay, parental leave, Long Term Disability, or
    sessional lay off.

  • Staff member must be eligible prior to the start date of the course, but the entitlement is based on the staff member's status on the fee deadline.

  • Recurring Part Time, Temporary Relief, Temporary Short Term, Project Short Term, Casual, and Student employees are not eligible for Tuition Support.

Academic Staff and Senior Leadership Team

  • From the start date of the appointment

  • The Academic staff and Senior Leadership Team member must continue to hold his or her appointment during all sessions to which the tuition support applies.

Dependents of Support Staff and Management and Professional Staff

  • Are eligible for tuition support after the staff member has completed 1 year of continuous service in a benefit eligible position.

  • Dependents must meet the definition of dependent under the University's extended health care plan. The staff member must provide evidence, satisfactory to the Board, that a child is a dependent. A child shall be considered a dependent if, during the period for which tuition fee waiver is being sought, such child is included as an eligible dependent on the same Alberta Health Care registration as the staff member.

  • The spouse or dependent child must satisfy all academic and registration requirements and also pay such other general compulsory fees as normally assessable to students.

  • The staff member must be eligible prior to the start date of the course, but the entitlement is based on the staff member's status on the fee deadline.

  • Where the spouse or dependent child is enrolled as a full-time student, any unspent portion of the tuition fee waiver may be carried forward and added to the subsequent year's entitlement during the four year period starting with the year in which the spouse or dependent child first registers as a full-time student.

  • Normally no spouse or dependent child shall be eligible for more than one tuition fee remission benefit in respect of any one Academic year. However, if both spouses are employees, each spouse has full access to the benefits.

Dependents of Academic Staff and Senior Leadership Team Member

  • Eligible from the start date of the appointment.

  • Dependents must meet the definition of dependent under the University's extended health care plan. The staff member must provide evidence, satisfactory to the Board, that a child is a dependent. A child shall be considered a dependent if, during the period for which tuition fee waiver is being sought, such child is included as an eligible dependent on the same Alberta Health Care registration as the staff member.

  • For full-time staff members, tuition support for up to 4 Academic credit courses (half-course equivalent) are offered at the University of Calgary per Academic year. The maximum benefit is based on the course fee listed in the University of Calgary Fee Chart.

  • For part-time staff members, based on full-time equivalent (FTE):
    0.8 - 1.0 FTE: 100% of Tuition Support maximum
    0.6 - 0.79 FTE: 80% of Tuition Support maximum
    0.4 - 0.59 FTE: 60% of Tuition Support maximum
  • The course must have an Academic course number. Courses that do not have an Academic course number are not eligible for tuition support.

  • Up to 4 courses offered by Continuing Education per Academic year. For detailed guidelines and limitations, please refer to the Continuing Education website.
  • Unused Tuition Support for Academic and Continuing Education courses cannot be carried forward into the next benefit year.

  • Tuition support for up to 3 Academic credit courses (half-course equivalent) at the undergraduate level, combined with a spouse, are offered at the University of Calgary per Academic year. The maximum benefit is based on the course fee listed in the University of Calgary Fee Chart.
  • The course must have an Academic course number. Courses that do not have an Academic course number are not eligible for tuition support.
  • The staff member only is eligible for up to 3 courses offered by Continuing Education per Academic year. For detailed guidelines and limitations, please refer to the Continuing Education website.

  • Unused Tuition Support for Academic and Continuing Education courses cannot be carried forward into the next benefit year.

Dependents of Full-time Support Staff and Management and Professional Staff

  • Tuition support for up to 3 Academic credit courses (half-course equivalent) are offered at the University of Calgary per Academic year. The maximum benefit is based on the course fee listed in the University of Calgary Fee Chart.

Dependents of Part-time Support Staff

  • The maximum tuition support is one half the value of 3 Academic credit courses (half-course equivalent) as outlined in the University of Calgary Fee Chart.

Dependents of Part-time Management and Professional Staff

  • The maximum tuition support benefit is based on the FTE of the staff member as follows:
    0.8 - 1.0 FTE: 100% of Tuition Support maximum
    0.6 - 0.79 FTE: 80% of Tuition Support maximum
    0.4 - 0.59 FTE 60% of Tuition Support maximum

Dependent Children of Academic Staff and Senior Leadership Team Members

  • The maximum tuition support for up to 3 Academic credit courses (half-course equivalent) at the undergraduate level as stated in the University of Calgary Fee Chart

Application Process - Academic Credit Courses

Academic Credit Courses

NOTE: The application must be received prior to the fee payment deadline date for the session in which the Tuition Support is to be applied.

The online application form cannot be saved so ensure that you have the following details available to complete your application.

If application is for a dependent:

  • Dependent’s first and last name
  • Student ID
  • Total Number of Courses claimed for the semester
  • Total Dollar value of tuition for the courses claimed for the semester

Click on the submit button only once the application is complete. 

Following submission, you will receive an email confirming your application, including a time stamp record and the details of your submission.

Please Note: 

  • A separate tuition support application is required for each applicant (self and eligible dependent(s).
  • The tuition support application is for a specific session. A new application will be required for any future sessions.

Fees will be applied to the student account after eligibility for this benefit is confirmed and after the fee deadline.  Any Tuition Support applied is subject to further audit and may be changed should any discrepancies be found.

Continuing Education Withdrawal, Refund and Transfer Policy

As of September 1, 2016 employees using tuition support for Continuing Education courses will be required to pay a $25 administrative fee for all dropped or transferred courses.  Please review the Refund, Withdrawal and Transfer Policy on the Continuing Education website for details. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Do courses I take under the Tuition Support Program have to be related to my job?
No, you decide which courses you'd like to take, whether for job-related competency development, or for personal interest and development. Human Resources also recommends specific Continuing Education Courses that are aligned with our core competencies; some of which have university-staff-only offerings. Click here to learn more.

Do I pay all my fees immediately or do I wait until after the tuition support has been processed?

Pay the difference between the total fees and the anticipated tuition support credits prior to the fee deadline to avoid any negative impact on the student account. Check the student account three weeks after the fee deadline to verify the tuition support has been processed and there is no outstanding balance.

Can I use tuition support to audit a course?

Tuition Support can be used to audit an Academic credit course.

Can I use tuition support to take a course at another University?

Tuition Support is for Academic credit courses offered at the University of Calgary. The benefit cannot be applied to courses taken at any other educational institution.

Are Continuing Education short courses, seminars, workshops or conferences covered?
Yes, the Tuition Support Program covers the cost of tuition for Continuing Education courses, including short courses, seminars, workshops and conferences. Some exclusions apply. You should confirm with Continuing Education that the discount applies to the course.

What happens when I exceed the limit of 4 Continuing Education courses?
You can still receive a 25% fee discount for eligible Continuing Education courses that you pay for yourself.

Are my family members eligible for tuition support under this program?
This program does not apply to family members. However, if your dependent children are enrolled in degree-program courses at the University of Calgary, you may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver or remission benefit.
