Design 201       Introduction to Design Thinking Studio I
A foundational introduction to design thinking as applied to the built environment of buildings, cities, and landscapes. Emphasizes visual/spatial two- and three-dimensional abstract design thinking and problem-solving skills.

Design 203       Design Thinking and the City Studio
Emphasis is given to the research, execution, and creation of small-scale, social innovation, design thinking interventions based in an urban setting.

Design 211       Introduction to Visual and Communications Studies
Builds and develops awareness, skills and practice in visual representation of design work. Emphasis on orthographic drawings, visualizing objects, spaces and environments in a way that focuses on geometry/form/proportion.

Design 213       Introduction to Visualizing Complexity
Development of skills in visualizing data sets, diagraming and simulating site conditions. Introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) as a platform for visualizing complex urban environments. Complex assemblies simulation – parametric design intro (DATA).

Design 221       Histories of Innovation in the Designed Environment
Historical studies addressing the global emergence of different modernities in the designed environment. Emphasizes themes such as industrialization and modernization, coloniality, nationalism and internationalism, and professionalization, as these relate to architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning.

Design 223       Shaping the Contemporary City I
Examines the structures of society as determinants of urban form, including political systems and governance, economics and urban development, and social organization. Emphasizes the agency of individuals and groups, through such topics as power and resistance, spatial justice, multiculturalism, professions and the public.

Design 431       Introduction to Building Science
Introduces key concepts in building science: functioning of building enclosure, the physical behaviour of building components under thermal/pressure stresses; the fundamentals of acoustics; building materials and their behaviour properties relative to climatic cycles.
