SUPPORT: Test Your Concept

The  Test Your Concept initiative arose from a desire expressed by SUPPORT to be able to connect with researchers much earlier in the development of a research proposal and provide feedback and guidance throughout the development process.  The Test Your Concept opportunity is open to all interested parties, regardless of their stage of development.

Benefits of Participation

  1. Engage perspective of members from across the U of C research community regarding what makes a strong application
  2. Gain insight into the feasibility of your proposed project from the perspective of key services units (Facilities Development, etc.)
  3. Obtain assistance in performing an “environmental scan”(identify individuals across campus who might be strong collaborators and what equipment may already exists)
  4. Receive feedback on how to expand upon your ideas and target them toward specific competitions
  5. Information on next steps

The  Test Your Concept panels will consist of:

  • Members of SUPPORT
  • Associate Vice-President(s) Research
  • Representatives from Facilities Development
  • Members of the Institutional Programs Division of the Research Services Office

What to Prepare

Pitch - You will have 20 minutes to Test Your Concept. Within that time, you will have an opportunity to present your proposed research project and to receive feedback from the SUPPORT panel.

Please come prepared to deliver a 5 minute pitch* outlining your proposed project that includes:

  • A statement describing your area of interest and an overview of your proposed project
  • A list of any potential collaborators
  • The competition believed to best align with your concept

The remaining 15 minutes will be reserved for discussion with and feedback from the Test Your Concept panel. You will be provided with the minutes from your session; however, please come prepared to take notes on the discussion and feedback portion of the Test Your Concept opportunity. Participants will also be added to the appropriate mailing list for future communications regarding pertinent competitions.

*The 5 minute pitch time limit will be strictly enforced to ensure ample time for discussion and feedback - please prepare accordingly.

Concept Summary - To ensure that the Test Your Concept panel can effectively engage and provide constructive feedback during your session, you will be asked to submit a half-page Concept Summary to once your session has been confirmed.

The  Concept Summary will be distributed to the members of the Test Your Concept panel in advance of your session.
