Effective March 8, 2013, the IRISS Research Ethics Board (REB) application makes the many ethics documents needed for certification flow effectively and alert researchers to potential compliance issues. The first phase will offer a convenient, secure, online process to streamline and modernize application and certification processes. IRISS aims to reduce process time and will alert researchers of potential compliance issues.

The Research Ethics Boards module is the second of three components of IRISS-Phase One (animal care certification and biohazards are modules one and three). This module gives researchers a new streamlined workflow when applying for ethics certification as now applicants will log in to IRISS to create, submit and track their ethics application.

Ethical certification requirements and processes remain the same. IRISS simply makes it easier for both the researcher and the review board. IRISS improves workflow, makes it easier to apply and offers timely, consistent feedback and communication.

Getting Started – Next Steps

  • Indicate how  you would like to receive IRISS training: Training Options
  • Share thisinformation with anyone who will be helping you with your application. They are also able to register in IRISS.
  • Have your UCIT Account on hand – You will need it to register. Your UCIT Account is up to 8 characters long and is usually composed of a portion of your surname and one or more of your first initials. You use your UCIT account to log into webmail.

On Monday, August 19, 2013 researchers requiring ongoing REB certification for their projects will have access to the next IRISS REB module: modification. This new function gives Principal Investigators (PIs) and their teams the ability to make changes to existing IRISS applications, saving time and while maintaining a history of changes to their ethics application.

Once logged into IRISS, PIs can select the application they the need to modify, make the updates and save the new version. The modification module features:

  • Modify and submit changes to an approved application
  • Upgrade stage approval applications to a full application
  • Pre-populated data fields and drop-down menus to minimize administrative errors
  • Ability to cut, paste and attach information from other documents
  • Access for the research team; for those helping to prepare the application prior to the PI submitting

As with any initial application, when a modification is submitted electronically, it is assigned and routed to the appropriate REB Committee. The research team can track and review comments, responses and any necessary amendments online in addition to:

  • tracking the modifications progress,
  • receiving certifications and modification notifications automatically via email to ensure the timely release of research funds, and
  • saving information to be used in application renewals or future modifications.
