Parental Leave

The University of Calgary complies with the parental leave policies of the funding agencies. Postdocs are advised to contact the Postdoc Office as early as possible to discuss individual parental leave options.

Institutional Expectations

A postdoctoral research position involves full-time academic research or scholarship, and consequently postdocs are expected to devote full-time effort toward these activities. For the protection of both the University of Calgary and the postdoc, all postdocs are expected to conduct themselves according to the Principles of Conduct and those of Integrity in Scholarly Activity of the University of Calgary, as well as the policies related to research and  trust employment , including the policies regarding sexual harassment, gender equity, maintenance of work records, archival materials, and laboratory notes, safety, animal care, patent and copyright regulations, intellectual property rights, software and conflict of interest. The postdoc is also required to familiarize themselves and comply with all established policies and procedures of their research group and department.

Intellectual Property

The postdoc should receive appropriate recognition of their contribution to the research enterprise. This should include the freedom, and expectation, to publish results from their research or scholarship during the period of the appointment. A postdoc who has made a substantial intellectual contribution to the development of intellectual property should be regarded as one of the creators. The University of Calgary has specific guidelines with respect to intellectual property that may be consulted.

Postdocs are normally considered to be affiliated with the primary Department and Research Group of their supervisor. The Research Group environment contributes to the academic activities of the postdoc, including education, training and research. To benefit most from their training, it is recommended that postdocs participate actively in the academic activities of their Research Group and Department.


Supervisors are expected to provide mentoring to postdocs both in terms of research training and in preparation for career opportunities. The supervisor should recognize the temporary, educational nature of the postdoctoral position. Postdocs should be encouraged to participate in Research Group and Department academic activities, such as seminars and workshops. They should also be given the opportunity to attend scientific meetings at which they present their research findings, and should be encouraged to explore career opportunities. Good mentoring involves frequent, clear and open communication between supervisor and postdoc. This may include an annual performance evaluation. Postdocs may also seek advice from Research Group Chairs and Department Heads.

Lines of Authority and Conflict Management

In the event of conflicts or problems concerning the postdoc's training program or academic involvement; the postdoc should seek advice from the following individuals (in order):

  • Supervisor
  • Research Group Chair
  • Department Head
  • Postdoctoral Program Coordinator
  • Associate Dean
  • Dean

It is considered most desirable that all disputes are resolved informally among those concerned and that every attempt is made to exhaust the informal options before proceeding to a formal appeal. If the issue is still not resolved, then, depending upon the nature of the problem, the Dean of the Faculty will refer the issue to the appropriate authorities. Note that formal processes are in place at the University of Calgary to address issues of Academic and Non-Academic misconduct.
