OosTime Break Software

OosTime is a program useful for reminding yourself to take rest breaks from your computer. If you would like to have OosTime on your computer, e-mail your request to itshelp@ucalgary.ca. If you already have another program, MouseTool on your computer, it can also be used to remind yourself to take a break from your computer.

After OosTime is installed, a yellow clock icon will display in your system tray, next to the time. To bring up the menu, right click on the icon. From the menu you can edit or view the settings for a micropause or a rest break, or you can disable the program.

There are two types of rest breaks in OosTime. One is a "Micropause" which is for frequent, very short breaks. The other is a "Restbreak", for more infrequent, longer breaks.

The interval between micropauses can be set to be from 1 to 10 minutes while the duration of the micropause can be set from 0 to 60 seconds. The interval between restbreaks can be set from 10 to 60 minutes with a duration of from 0 to 10 minutes. Setting the duration to zero disables either break.

When either of the breaks is due, a break reminder window will display. You can choose "OK" or  press Tab or the space bar to end the break early. However, there is a setting that determines whether the break is to be enforced or not. If the "Enforce Breaks" option is checked, OosTime will prevent any computer activity until the break is over; then the option can be unchecked. As the appearance of a "frozen" computer could be confusing, and as the option cannot be changed until the break is over, ITS recommends that the "Enforce Breaks" option be left unchecked.

OosTime monitors activity on your computer and if there has been no keyboard or mouse activity due to you doing other tasks, the break window will not display.

To check the time remaining until the next breaks, or to reset the break timer, left click on the icon. To exit this window, minimize it. If you accidentally close the window using the "X" box, you will need to return the icon to the system tray by clicking on Start / Programs and then clicking on Startup, then OosTime.
