Charlie Fischer

Scholars Academy remembers Charlie Fischer

Charlie Fischer, Advisory Council member and mentor, will be remembered throughout the Calgary community for his remarkable leadership and vision. Scholars Academy is one of the many initiatives he inspired through his passion for challenging students to become the change makers they want to see in the world – just as he was.

An influential force since the very beginning of Scholars Academy, Charlie contributed his time and energy in multiple ways. From serving on the Advisory Council for eight years to mentoring students one-one one, Charlie marked each interaction with kindness, encouragement, and undeniable passion for creating positive change in the world. His unwavering commitment to improving education inspired the program’s mission of creating a community of support for top students.

Scholars Academy would not be the same without Charlie’s generosity, and his gentle presence will always be remembered.

“I first met Charlie Fischer as a new member of the Scholars Academy Program at the University of Calgary. I was an aspiring physician who did not know much about the business world, and initially was quite intimidated at the thought of having Charlie for a mentor. However, he was quick to put me at ease, and to show me the value of including different perspectives in a discussion. I learned so much from discussing the healthcare system with him, about how a business model can be used to incentivize different behaviours, and how our payment model for physicians could be changed to promote better care. As I continue my medical training, I still apply those ideas and am looking forward to the opportunity to work in a new payment model being rolled out across British Columbia – one that incentivizes quality of care over quantity of patients. Thank you, Charlie, for broadening my perspectives and for all your invaluable contributions to the Scholars Academy Program and the education of the physicians and leaders of tomorrow.”
