This award honours the contributions to research, teaching and our community made by Dr. T. Chen Fong and seeks to advance the field of medical imaging science.  

  • Field of Study: Imaging
  • Commencement of Award: September 1, 2017 - December 31, 2017
  • Only tenable at the University of Calgary.

For the upcoming competition, applicants must have earned their PhD, MD or equivalent degree for less than three years by 1 September of the competition year.  If degree is still pending, it must be completed before 30 September of the competition year. Preference will be given to candidates who have received some of their education at other institutions. 

The successful candidate must carry out a program of independent research, present one or more departmental seminars for students and faculty, and contribute on an informal basis to other departmental activities. Research must focus on the development or implementation of imaging science with direct relevance to medical imaging applications. 

Postdoctoral scholars are encouraged to apply for awards from provincial, national or international agencies. However, a postdoctoral scholar cannot hold a full T. Chen Fong Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medical Imaging Science with another award. If an applicant receives external funding/fellowship(s), the value of the T. Chen Fong Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medical Imaging Science will be the difference between the full fellowship ($60,000) and the external funding/fellowship(s). All other conditions follow the University of Calgary postdoctoral policy and procedures, as approved by the Vice-President (Research). 

Citizenship is unrestricted.

Additional Information

For the 2017 T. Chen Fong Competition, two fellowships valued at $60K/year for one year are available.

The extended health benefit plan, which is mandatory for all postdoctoral scholars, is not covered by the award. It is the responsibility of the supervisor to cover the cost of the benefit plan. 

The stipend will be considered as a fellowship income, and will not be subject to Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) deductions. The stipend will however be subject to the Income Tax Act as per the Regulations of the Government of Canada.
