Biography

Emma is a postdoctoral associate in the Geomicrobiology group. She is interested in geomicrobial processes in subsurface ecosystems. Currently, Emma is focusing on the activity of thermophilic bacteria in oil sands from northern Alberta. She received her Ph.D. from Newcastle University, United Kingdom, looking at the factors shaping microbial diversity in aquatic environments using heat-resistant spore-forming thermophilic bacteria derived from warm deep biosphere habitats. She then spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher in the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, focusing on the metabolic function of microbial communities in deep groundwater from Finland.
