Biography

Agasteswar Vadlamani is a postdoctoral associate in the Energy Bioengineering group. His research is mainly focussed on cultivation and scale-up of cyanobacteria and production of food grade phycocyanin from the biomass by auto fermentation process. Agast completed his PhD in December, 2016 at the University of Toledo (Ohio, USA). As a part of his PhD, Agast identified the challenges associated with outdoor cultivation of alkaliphilic microalgae and tailored the growth medium accordingly to improve the productivities. He has successfully demonstrated that high pH growth conditions allowed sustained maintenance of microalgae over a prolonged periods and enabled microalgae cultivation without additional CO2 inputs. Additionally, he has developed two novel technologies: 1) biochemical route for extraction of sugars and simultaneous conversion to organic acids (i.e. fermentation) and, 2) harvesting microalgae using temperature sensitive hydrogels for which patents were awarded.
