Emergency Preparedness Week
May 5-11, 2024
About Emergency Preparedness Week
Take action to prepare you, your family, and your community for emergencies.
Emergency Preparedness Week is an annual event supported by Public Safety Canada, in collaboration with various organizations. It typically occurs during the first week of May.
Emergency Preparedness Week is an opportunity for the UCalgary community to prepare and protect themselves, their families and their communities, by bolstering personal resilience in the face of unforeseen crises or emergencies. Personal resilience refers to the ability to adapt and recover from adversity, ensuring the well-being of oneself, loved ones, and the broader community.
Personal Resilience in Emergencies
Here are some steps that can be taken to enhance personal resilience:
Stay educated and aware
Knowledge is the first line of defense in any emergency situation – Familiarizing yourself with resources available both on and off-campus is a great way to be prepared.
Sign up to receive emergency alerts
To foster a safe, prepared campus, there are many ways you can obtain information during an emergency, including apps.
UCSafety app
Download the UCSafety app to receive alerts and stay up to date on emergency events happening on campus. These alerts can save lives and prevent injury, helping to foster a safe and healthy living and learning environment for the UCalgary community.
UCalgary Emergency Management conducts monthly testing on the second Wednesday of each month at 11:55 a.m. Testing allows the campus community to become familiar with the app and ensures that all members are receiving messages.
If you have the UCSafety app installed on your mobile device and are not receiving the test message, contact us at emergencymgmt@ucalgary.ca.
Alert Ready
This is Canada’s warning system to help you and your family stay informed and safe during an emergency or disaster. If you receive an alert, you should take the appropriate action to protect yourself.
Alberta Emergency Alert
This is Alberta’s warning system that issues alerts to warn people about potential risks to health and safety.
Put on your resilience backpack
It's crucial to prioritize mental and emotional health to uphold personal resilience both during and after emergencies.
The below self-care practices can promote resilience in the face of adversity.
