Admission

See the sections on Enrolment Limitations under the Department of Geoscience and under Section 3 (Faculty Regulations).

Courses constituting the field of Applied and Environmental Geology
Required Courses - Major Program

See also Section 3 (Faculty Regulations), Subsections 3.4B (Program Requirements - Major Degree Programs) and 3.5B (Introductory Courses for Science Degree Programs).

Commencing in Fall 2014, Geology 313 will replace Geology 423, Geology 333 will replace Geology 311, Geology 343 will replace Geology 341, Geology 353 will replace Geology 373, and Geophysics 351 will replace Geophysics 355 as the core departmental courses for Majors and Honours students and will serve as prerequisites for the appropriate courses.

7.0 FCE - Geology 201, 202 or 203, 313 or 423, 323, 333 or 311, 343 or 341, 353 or 373, 381, 401, 435, 503, 505, 571, 597

1.0 FCE - Option from the field of Geology (Geology 441 is recommended)

1.0 FCE - Geophysics 351, 565

1.0 FCE - Physics 211 or 221, 223

1.0 FCE - Chemistry 201 or 211, and 203 or 213

0.5 FCE - Mathematics 249 or 265 or 275

0.5 FCE - Mathematics 253 or 267 or 277

0.5 FCE - Mathematics 211

0.5 FCE - Mathematics 331

0.5 FCE - Statistics 327

0.5 FCE - Science 311

2.0 FCE - Science or Engineering options chosen from the following (see Notes):

*Recommended options

0.5 FCE - Option (Science or Engineering options are recommended)

3.5 FCE - Breadth requirement: Non-science options (see Notes)

Notes:

  • The Major program may contain a maximum of 10 FCE from the field of Applied and Environmental Geology, and the Honours program may contain a maximum of 12 FCE from the field of Applied and Environmental Geology.
  • 600-level courses are available to fourth year students with prerequisites and consent of the Department.
  • In order to meet the academic requirements for registration with APEGA, the Applied and Environmental Geology Majors program must include, in addition to the physics, chemistry and statistics courses already required in the program, 0.5 FCE in one of biology, chemistry, computer science, statistics or physics. This choice must be made from either the 2.0 FCE Science or Engineering Options or the 0.5 FCE Options for the Applied and Environmental Geology Majors program.
  • These 3.5 FCE and Science 311 form the 4.0 FCE non-science course requirements selected from Faculties other than the Faculty of Science (see Table I, 3.4. Program Requirements for courses that may not be used to satisfy this requirement). Of these 4.0 FCE, students must take at least 1.0 FCE from the Faculty of Arts (see (d) Breadth requirement in 3.4 Program Requirements.
Required Courses - Honours Program

Commencing in Fall 2014, Geology 313 will replace Geology 423, Geology 333 will replace Geology 311, Geology 343 will replace Geology 341, Geology 353 will replace Geology 373, and Geophysics 351 will replace Geophysics 355 as the core departmental courses for Majors and Honours students and will serve as prerequisites for the appropriate courses.

*Geology 435 is a field school that runs for about 14 days prior to the Fall Term or after the Winter Term.

**Geology 441 is a field school that runs for about 12-14 days after the Winter Term.

***For this year only, both second-year and third-year students will be taking Geology 313 (third-year students will be taking it in place of Geology 423, which is cancelled, and second-year students will be taking it in place of Geology 311, which is also cancelled).

Note: Students taking a geology field school course in a term are permitted to register in an additional 2.5 FCE in that term (for a total of 3.0 FCE).
