University of Calgary Calendar 2014-2015 Undergraduate Admissions A.9 Undergraduate Admission Requirements A.9.1 Standard Admission A.9.1.1 Alberta High School Students
A.9.1.1 Alberta High School Students

The basic general admission requirement to the University is Alberta Grade XII graduation, or equivalent, with required standing in five appropriate subjects.

1. Admission to all programs will be on a competitive basis and an average is normally calculated on five specified subjects as detailed in A.2 Admission Requirements at the University of Calgary.

2. Students presenting a subject from Group C or D as their fifth subject must obtain a minimum average of 65.0 per cent on the remaining four subjects and an overall average which meets the current competitive requirement.

Alberta high school applicants should check the Alberta high school subject chart and faculty listings below to ascertain the admission requirements of the faculty of their choice.

General Notes:

1. Applicants applying under the College Entrance Examinations policy are required to present a high school diploma. All other applicants are strongly recommended to obtain a high school diploma or equivalent.

2. Applicants not able to present the required average or five subjects will not be admitted. Exceptions to this regulation are only made when applicants enter the University under the Adult Student policy.

3. The University reserves the right to prescribe additional examinations in cases where doubt exists concerning matriculation.

Further details regarding admission requirements are given in each faculty entry in this Calendar.

The Alberta advanced high school diploma is not required for admission.

2. English Language Arts 30-1 is a required subject for admission to all faculties at the University of Calgary.

3. A student may not present for admission two subjects in the same field (e.g., both English Language Arts 30-1 and English Language Arts 30-2) with the following exceptions: Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 31; Mathematics 30-2 and Mathematics 31; languages (excluding French - see Note 6) with the permission of the Associate Registrar, Recruitment and Admissions; Art 30 and Art 31 or Choral, General and Instrumental Music 30 (Fine Arts programs only).

4. Both Mathematics 30-1 and Mathematics 30-2 cannot be presented for admission.

5. Applicants presenting Mathematics 30-2 who subsequently wish to enter a program requiring Mathematics 30-1 must successfully complete (in some cases with specified standing) Mathematics 101 through Athabasca University or Mathematics 30-1 through an Alberta high school. Other alternatives are available through the University’s Department of Continuing Education and Mount Royal University.

6. Only one of French 30, 31A, 31B, 31C; French Language Arts 30, 30-2; Francais 30, 30-2 may be used to satisfy admission requirements.

Faculty of Social Work

The Faculty of Social Work will consider for admission only those applicants who have successfully completed a minimum of twenty half university courses. Normally, first- or second-year students enter another undergraduate faculty.

Werklund School of Education

In co-operation with other faculties, the Werklund School of Education offers a five year concurrent program to award a BEd with one of a BA, BKin, BMus or BSc degree. Applicants to the five year concurrent BEd program must satisfy the subject requirements of the faculty offering the BA, BKin, BMus or BSc degree. Students complete three years of study in the faculty offering the BA, BKin, BMus or BSc degree and two years of study with the Werklund School of Education.

Early Admission for High School Students

An early offer of admission for Fall Session may be granted to students completing grades 10, 11, and 12 at a high school in Canada and who also achieve an average of 90 per cent or higher in subjects completed in grade 11. Early admission is based on final grades in four academic subjects to include English Language Arts and three other appropriate subjects. Applicants must submit their application for admission no later than December 15th and a transcript reporting final grades for all courses completed in Grade 11 as well as their Grade 12 course registration. More information about the requirements and application process is available on the website: http://www.ucalgary.ca/admissions/process/early.

Early Admission offers are finalized when a transcript is received by the deadline of August 1 which reports that all admission requirements have been met.

Applicants who are not granted Early Admission will be considered for an offer of Conditional Admission.

Conditional Admission for High School Students

A conditional offer of admission for Fall Session may be granted to above-average students in Canadian high schools seeking admission. Conditional admission is based on final Grade 11 and 12 grades achieved on five appropriate subjects appropriate for entry to the desired program. Where both Grade 11 and Grade 12 final grades are available for a subject, the Grade 12 grade will be considered. Conditional admission will be granted if the applicant presents a specified average over the five appropriate subjects with no grade below 60 per cent in any subject. Where more than two grades are submitted, the best two grades will be used. The Schulich School of Engineering will consider an average calculated over four required subjects if no final grade for Mathematics 31 is available. More information about the requirements and application process is available on the website: http://www.ucalgary.ca/admissions/process/conditional.

Qualified high school students who wish to be considered for conditional admission should self-report their course and grade directly on the Application for Admission. Alternatively, students can submit the application as soon as possible and provide or update their course and grade information by logging onto their MyUofC account at https://my.ucalgary.ca/ and opening the “Academic” tab and then clicking on "Change UGRD application” under “Admissions/Personal Info” menu. Changes can be made until March 1.

When final grades are available for all Grade 12 subjects, conditionally admitted students will be required to meet the admission requirements and admission average required by their faculty. Students who fail to meet these requirements will have their admission and registration cancelled. If official transcripts verifying admissibility are not received by August 1, admission will be rescinded.

Applicants who are not granted conditional admission will have their admissibility determined upon receipt of official transcripts of final grades. Applicants who are granted conditional admission to their second program choice but who meet the admission requirements and final admission average for their first program choice, will be admitted to their first program choice if space is available.

Notes:

1. Applicants who complete required matriculation subjects during Summer 2014 cannot be considered for admission.

2. Applicants to the Neuroscience program should contact the Recruitment and Admissions Office for conditional admission requirements.
