Understanding your fees

UCalgary assesses fees for each term that you are an active full- or part-time student/trainee (residents and fellows). In addition to tuition fees, some programs have program-specific fees that are charged each term. Students/trainees can review their assessed fees in the My Financials section of the Student Centre and generate a Term Account Summary to support understanding the assessment.

Tuition

Students and trainees (residents and fellows) pay the tuition and fees applicable to the term in which they are admitted and begin their program, also known as the student’s admission term, regardless of when they received their letter of admission to the program. A program may have term-based program-specific tuition and fees, in addition to tuition assessed on a per course basis.

Course fees:

Course fees vary by career of the course, the faculty offering the course, and in some cases the program the course is offered through. Students will be assessed per course tuition fees as listed in the Course Fee Rate Group tables in the Academic Calendar.

Undergraduate students taking a graduate-level course will pay the graduate course fee rate. Graduate students taking an undergraduate-level course will pay the undergraduate course fee rate.

Undergraduate

Course based tuition for undergraduate courses  varies by faculty and are assessed per unit based on the approved course fee rate group for the faculty. Some programs may have additional program-specific fees as listed below.

Graduate

Students in a thesis-based degree (master's or doctoral) program or in a professional doctorate program, are assessed tuition fees per term as listed below.

Students in most course-based graduate programs are assessed tuition per unit based on the approved course fee rate group for the program. In Graduate Studies, the program of study to which a course is allocated determines the course fee rate group for that course.

Retained Tuition Rate:

Some students are eligible for a different tuition rate based on the term and program to which they were admitted. These rates are referred to as Retained Tuition Rate Groups throughout this Calendar. Undergraduate students eligible for a Retained Tuition Rate Group see P.1.1.1 Undergraduate Retained Tuition Rate Groups and eligible graduate students see P.2.3.2 Graduate Course-based Retained Tuition Rate Groups.

General Fees

General fees are assessed each term the student has active enrolment, whether at a full or part-time academic load. Some fees are assessed each term, and some are assessed annually. See the links below for a full list of the applicable general fees, and the services that they fund.

*The following fees may be optional. See optional fee information below for details.

Note: PGME trainees (residents and fellows) are not assessed general fees, however, trainees may choose to opt-in to the UPass, if eligible.

Term Account Summary

The term account summary is a feature within the My Financials section of Student Center (my.ucalgary.ca). The fee assessment provides a detailed summary of all financial transactions on your account for a specified term.  It includes:

  • a breakdown of tuition organized by course (if applicable)
  • associated general fees (if applicable)
  • residence charges (if applicable)
  • payment plan charges with associated due dates (if applicable)

The term account summary also lists payments by term, including UCalgary scholarships and refunds.

The term account summary is not an invoice, nor is it intended to act as an official confirmation of tuition amounts for a third party.  If you need an official confirmation of registration letter featuring assessed fees, you can print a confirmation of registration letter.  If you need an official invoice for a third party, you would need to engage in the Third Party Sponsorship process.
