Management Information Systems 317       Management Information Systems
Introduction to management information systems and how such systems facilitate business activities. Foundations of intra- and inter-organizational systems are covered along with their economic, social and organizational impacts. Managerial, leadership, and ethical issues in management of information systems are examined. Analysis, design, development, implementation, and project management issues are addressed through a semester-long, applied course project undertaken by student teams.
Course Hours: H(3-3T)
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Haskayne School of Business, and either Management Studies 217 and Strategy and Global Management 217, or Business and Environment 291 and Computer Science 203.

Management Information Systems 321       Information Systems in Business
Introduction to the fundamentals of management information systems and how such systems facilitate business transactions and decision-making at all levels of management. Topics examine the  development, organization, management, control, and evaluation of information systems. Societal implications of the use of computer and networking technologies in business are also examined.
Course Hours: H(3-0)
Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of 5.0 full-course equivalents.

Management Information Systems 331       Data Management and Business Analytics
In the current world, businesses, consumers, and societies leave behind massive amounts of data as a by-product of their activities. Cutting edge businesses in every industry are harnessing the power of data to replace intuition and guesswork in their decision-making. The focus will be on organizing, storing, and managing the available data using relational databases and generating insights through business analytics techniques.

Management Information Systems 333       Systems Analysis and Design

Enterprise systems development focusing on analysis and high level design of the firm's IT platform. Emphasis is placed on modelling the enterprise architecture (business, information, application, and technology) for business-IT alignment, building the IT business case, IT project management, architecture description languages (UML, BPMN), and architecture methodologies.

Management Information Systems 455       Management Information Systems Field Project
Student teams assigned to organizations in Calgary and the surrounding area to solve specific information systems problems or issues. Teams investigate the problems and present proposed solutions to the organization contact. Teams will execute the approved project plan and present a final report both orally and in writing to the organization contact. The project may involve interviewing, library and Internet research, and data collection.

Prerequisite(s): Management Information Systems 317 and one senior Management Information Systems course.
Corequisite(s): One other senior Management Information Systems course.

Management Information Systems 459       Decision Support Application Development using VBA Programming
Students will work with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in order to create decision support systems and other applications across Microsoft Office Suite applications.  In addition students will be introduced  to how to use VBA skills to produce business applications.  The focus of the course will be the creation of applications that will allow managers to make meaningful decisions using available data like financial and other industry data from both internal and external sources.

Telecommunications and data communications fundamentals relevant to business organizations. Technologies and management issues associated with analog and digital signalling, transmission, networking, Internetworking, data compression, security and authentication. Management Information Systems 463       Management Issues in Information Systems

Using a managerial perspective, students are exposed to issues and emerging issues which are dealt with by both information systems managers and managers in other functional areas of a company from the perspectives of both practitioners and customers.    Emphasis is on the managerial and organizational issues associated with effective and efficient use of information systems, technology resources, and infrastructure.

Students will explore  the technologies and issues underlying enterprise systems, enterprise application integration,  workflow systems, and information analytics.  The focus is on strategic, managerial, and technical implications of the use of such systems in organizations. Students will examine the current managerial practices for enterprise system design, implementation, and usage.

Management Information Systems 467       e-Business
Management and technical issues related to the purchase, design, and implementation of online technologies to enable a range of organizational and business relationships, models and strategies. Topics include developing an e-technology strategy; business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) marketing; customer relationship management (CRM); supply chain management (SCM); planning, developing, and maintaining websites and supporting information systems; business processes; online payments; legal, privacy, and security issues; and the use of e-technology for intra-organizational purposes. The course provides for practical experience with current technologies through an applied course project.
