German GERM

Note: German 317, 357, and 359 are given in English and no knowledge of German is required. These courses do not count as prerequisites to other senior German courses.

Note: Consent of the Department can be received in lieu of a stated prerequisite when equivalent knowledge can be demonstrated. Note: All university level prerequisites for German language courses must be met with a grade of "C-" or better.

German 200       Encounters with German Culture
German culture - a history of extremes? Explores this dimension through selected topics such as the culture of revolution, media and propaganda, "supermen" real and imagined, nature and environment, religious protest, and political dissidence.

German 313       German Cultures in the Present
An introduction to reading authentic German texts. Practice in communication strategies and development of intercultural understanding.

German 315       German Cultures in the Past
Study of an historical period through authentic German texts of various types (e.g. literary, journalistic, informational) with the goal of improving reading comprehension and textual analysis skills. Practice in articulating abstract and complex ideas orally and in writing. This course includes on-line independent study modules (blended learning).

Introduction to research questions and research methods in German studies through case-study application.
