Halloween 101: Tips for first-timers plus events on campus

To somebody who has never celebrated Halloween, it’s a challenging tradition to explain. People believe that it began as a Celtic harvest festival, yet the event of today bears little resemblance to the traditions from which it originated.

For children, Halloween is an opportunity to walk door-to-door asking residents in their community for free candy by yelling “Trick or Treat!” at the front door of each house. For adults, it’s a chance to attend parties, write bad horror-themed puns, and like the children, eat more candy than is healthy.

Oct. 31 means something different for all age ranges, but what each group shares is the commitment to finding a good costume.

If you’re celebrating your first Halloween this year, here are some quick tips to help you get started making yours.

  • Decide on a costume theme or character.
It’s generally easier to shop and for people to guess what you are if it follows a theme.
  • Visit a thrift store or costume shop and find pieces to support your idea. The sky is the limit – don’t be afraid to stand out. Being silly is part of the fun.
  • Decide where you’re going to celebrate. Is there a party happening? Maybe you’re going to check out an event
  • If you're going out, remember to dress for the weather and plan your evening. Because Halloween parties often involve drinking, plan ahead for how to get home.
