ACCESS MENTAL HEALTH

Your child may have elevated anxiety after injury but this usually resolves, especially as they re-integrate into school and more typical activities. Mood disorders persisting for 3 months should be evaluated as any other mood disorder. Those reporting 6 months after injury may have a new onset of disorder (i.e., anxiety disorder). If your child/adolescent is currently seeing a specialist/healthcare provider for mood and anxiety related symptoms pre-injury, we encourage a follow-up visit with them to keep communication lines open and obtain advice.

CALGARY BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM

The Calgary Brain Injury Program (Brain Injury Clinic & Concussion Clinic) offers services for mild to moderate to severe brain injury survivors. The Concussion Clinic is an outpatient service that provides triage, advice, and facilitates access to several different concussion services. Examples of these services include:

  • Early Concussion Education Group: Adults who have sustained a concussion and are < 3 months post-injury are able to attend our Early Concussion Education Group. Groups are delivered approximately twice a month at the Foothills Medical Centre. During these two-hour sessions, general concussion information and education is provided by an Occupational Therapist and Social Worker. Key self-management strategies are presented and attendees receive guidance for managing symptoms and support for the “next steps” in their recovery.
  • Online Concussion Education Module: A concussion education module for patients has been created using a variety of modalities (written materials, audio clips, printable exercises, videos) and can be located on the My Health Alberta website: https://myhealth.alberta.ca/learning/modules/Early-Concussion
  • The Concussion Clinic: Provides assessment and treatment by brain injury rehabilitation specialists (Physiatrists) to those who are > 3 months post-injury. A Community Case Manager and two Social Workers are also associated with the clinic and can offer assistance with illness adjustment, insurance claim navigation, financial supports, stress management, and locating appropriate community resources.
  • Information Hub: Details on both private and publically funded concussion services in the community can be provided in person, through email, or over the phone.
