Bill Rosehart has been appointed dean of the Schulich School of Engineering, effective April 1.

Dave Brown, University of Calgary

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Rosehart as dean of the Schulich School of Engineering, effective April 1, 2014. Bill accepts the role with a deep understanding of the position having served as interim dean since July 2013. He will be a passionate advocate for engineering, the university, and the City of Calgary.

Bill has had a distinguished career that started in the Schulich School of Engineering in 2001. Prior to becoming interim dean, Bill was head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he was an effective leader and strong contributor.

Throughout his career, Bill has been deeply committed to teaching and learning, a strength that will serve him well in his role as dean. He has been recognized with two University of Calgary Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Awards and has twice been named Professor of the Year in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Outside the university, Bill has been active with and received awards from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

Bill’s commitment to students is further highlighted through his involvement as a founding member of the Canadian Engineering Education Association, where he served as the western regional director on their governing board from 2011 to 2013. He also chairs the University of Calgary’s PURE (Program for Undergraduate Research Experience) awards committee.

A positive research environment is critical to Bill and he will place importance on a strong research agenda for the school in his new role as dean. Bill has held continuous (NSERC) Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada funding for more than a decade.

Bill is well-regarded in the community, having been named as one of Calgary’s Top 40 under 40 in 2007 by Avenue Magazine, a distinction that is awarded to individuals who excel in their fields, give back to the community and raise the profile of the city.

Bill becomes dean of the Schulich School of Engineering at an exciting time. During his term, he will oversee the completion of the $158 million Schulich Expansion and Renovation Project — a major re-development that will enable the school to increase its capacity by at least 400 additional undergraduate and graduate students.

Please join me in congratulating Bill Rosehart and welcoming him to his role as dean of the Schulich School of Engineering.
