  • Process Simulation Analytics

Laddered pathway from the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice I to Advanced Engineering Practice II

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice I may receive laddering credit for the 12 units of coursework completed and apply to the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice Il program. Students must apply to the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice II within 2 years from the beginning of the Advanced Engineering Practice I program.
2. Admission Requirements

Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice I

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Schulich School of Engineering requirements, all applicants require:
a) A BSc in a relevant discipline of Engineering or equivalent.

b) A minimum GPA of 3.00 (on the University of Calgary four-point system) calculated on the most recent 60 units (10.0 full course equivalents) of completed course work.
      c) Holders of a BSc or equivalent degrees in Science, Medicine or Kinesiology, if accepted, may be required to take additional senior undergraduate engineering courses. These courses will not be counted for credit toward their graduate program. Holders of Bachelor’s degrees from disciplines other than Engineering, Science, Medicine or Kinesiology are required to complete a minimum of 30 units (5.0 full-course equivalents) undergraduate engineering courses with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a four-point scale before admission.
          d) Minimum of one year of work experience in engineering or a closely related field, or at least one year of internship under a professional engineer in an engineering company.
              e) Resume or CV.
In exceptional circumstances, students who do not meet the entrance requirements (but have BSc degrees in the same or equivalent Engineering discipline and a GPA of at least 2.70) may be considered for admission after upgrading requirements have been met. Upgrading requirements include a minimum of 18 units (3.0 full-course equivalents) of coursework with a minimum grade of 3.00 on a 4.0-point scale in each course. At least 12 or 6 units (2.0 or 1.0 full-course equivalents) of these courses, respectively, must be at the graduate-level. Upgrading courses will be prescribed by the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) or designate in those instances where they are required.

Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice II

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ admission requirements, all applicants must have completed the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice I with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a four-point scale.
                3. Application Deadlines

Deadlines for submission of complete applications are available on the Future Students website: ucalgary.ca/futurestudents/graduate/explore-programs.
                4. Advanced Credit

Advanced credit will not be given in the Graduate Certificate programs.

*Note: students who wish to receive advanced credit for courses taken as part of the Graduate Certificate program(s) and apply the credit toward a MEng should consult with the Department offering the MEng.
                5. Course Requirements

Each of the Graduate Certificates in Advanced Engineering Practice I and II consists of 12 units of coursework:

                Specialization: Machine Learning Engineering
                Specialization: Software Engineering
Students without a software engineering background must first complete 3 foundation courses before taking the Graduate Certificate courses. The foundation courses are:
                • Software Engineering for Engineers 593
                • Software Engineering for Engineers 594
                • Software Engineering for Engineers 592
                Specialization: Process Engineering Sustainability
                Specialization: Process Simulation Analytics
Students must select different specializations in each of the two Graduate Certificates (i.e., a student cannot repeat the specialization that they completed in the first Certificate when they enrol in the second Certificate).

                Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

Students admitted to the Schulich School of Engineering will not be allowed to request the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course that is applicable to their degree; or apply any course awarded a grade of CG towards their graduation requirements.

Students may choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.

The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.
                6. Credit For Undergraduate Courses

No credit will be given for undergraduate courses towards the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice l or ll.
                7. Time Limit

The expected completion time for the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice I or II is one year, and the maximum completion time is two years.
                8. Supervisory Assignments

A Coordinator is assigned to each cohort in the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Engineering Practice I and II.
                9. Financial Assistance

Financial assistance is not generally available to students in the Advanced Engineering Graduate Certificate program.
