1. Degrees and Specializations Offered

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Master of Science (MSc), thesis-based
Master of Engineering (MEng), thesis-based and course-based

For registration status of thesis-based graduate students, see Engineering Programs.

Specializations:

The following specializations are offered only to course-based MEng degrees:

*The Department is currently not accepting applications for these specializations.

The Schulich School of Engineering does not formally offer a part-time option. All students will be considered full-time and register during the Fall and Winter terms (September to April) with a regularly scheduled break from May to August (this does not apply to the specialization in Petroleum Engineering).

2. Admission Requirements

See Engineering Programs.

4. Advanced Credit

See Engineering Programs.

5. Program/Course Requirements

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Schulich School of Engineering requirements, the Department normally requires:

Thesis-Based Programs

a) All Master of Science and doctoral students are required to complete Engineering 601 and 603 in the first year of their degree program in addition to the minimum program/course requirements, as stated in the Engineering Programs description.

b) Students must either present one research seminar at the annual Graduate Student Conference in the Winter Term or give an oral presentation at a science/engineering conference.

c) Students must also complete core course requirements for their specialization as described below.

Core courses:

Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Biomedical Engineering specializations

All Master of Science students must complete at least two of the core courses of their specialization. All doctoral students must have completed at least four of the core courses of their specialization before proceeding to the candidacy examination. Doctoral students in the Chemical Engineering specialization can substitute one core course for a core course in the Petroleum Engineering specialization. Doctoral students in the Petroleum Engineering specialization can substitute one core course for a core course in the Chemical Engineering specialization.

Environmental Engineering and Energy and Environment specializations

All Master of Science students must complete at least one of the core courses in their specialization. All doctoral students must have completed at least two of the core courses in their specialization before proceeding to the candidacy examination. Requirements for these specializations are listed under the corresponding sections.

Energy and Environmental Systems specialization

All Master of Science students must complete at least one of the core chemical engineering courses. All doctoral students must have completed at least two of the core chemical engineering courses before proceeding to the candidacy examination.

Master of Engineering (Course-Based)

Chemical Engineering Specialization

Students must complete 30 units of coursework as follows:

a) 12 units of required courses:

b) 9 units chosen from:
c) 9 units chosen from:

Petroleum Engineering Specialization

Students must complete 30 units of coursework as follows:

a) 12 units of required courses:

b) 18 units of Petroleum Engineering specialization courses from the list below. At least one of Petroleum Engineering 625 or 627 must be included in the 18 units. Any variations in required courses will be with the approval of the Department.

Petroleum Engineering courses attempted but failed (with a grade of "D+" or higher) may each be challenged once through an examination. Courses with a grade of "D" and "F" must be successfully repeated with a grade of at least a "B-" for each course. If a student passes a challenge examination, a "B-" grade will be recorded on the student's transcript. If a student fails the challenge examination, the original grade will stand, and the student will be required to repeat the course. Enrolling in a course but withdrawing before completion is not an attempt that qualifies for a challenge. Challenge examinations are available only for the ENPE courses, and there is a limit of two challenge examinations for a student's program.

Any course deficiency must be cleared at the next available opportunity. In the case that a student is unable to register for a course or withdraws from a course for valid reasons, the student may be able to substitute a similar course from the courses approved for the graduate thesis-based program with the approval of the Department.

All specializations except for Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering

At least 18 units at the graduate level must be from the declared area of specialization.

Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

Students admitted to the Schulich School of Engineering will not be allowed to request the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course that is applicable to their degree; or apply any course awarded a grade of CG towards their graduation requirements.

Students may choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.

The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.

6. Credit for Undergraduate Courses

Not applicable.

7. Time Limit

The Master of Engineering (course-based) program is typically completed full-time in one to two years, with academic sessions in the Fall and Winter and a scheduled break from May to August.

Master of Engineering (course-based) students in the Petroleum Engineering Specialization are normally expected to enroll in full-time studies and to complete the Master of Engineering (course-based) with a specialization in Petroleum Engineering in 8, 10 or 12 months, based on a schedule appropriate to their background and needs as assessed by the Department.

For other degrees, see Engineering Programs.

8. Supervisory Assignments

All students are required to have a supervisor before the second annual registration. For students in the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree programs, a supervisor is normally appointed at the time of admission. MEng (course-based) students do not require a supervisor.

9. Required Examinations

All final thesis oral examinations involve a public seminar/presentation before the oral examination. See Engineering Programs for more information about the examination.

For candidacy requirements, see the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering program website.

10. Financial Assistance

See Engineering Programs.
