This five-year program leads to a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama Education from the Faculty of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the Faculty of Education. A minimum of 25 full-course equivalents must be successfully completed.

Present certification requirements of the Province of Alberta can be satisfied. When planning courses, students should take into consideration Alberta Teacher Certification Requirements. For details, refer to the Faculty of Education website.

The BFA (Drama Education) program is a specialized three-year program, which exists only in combination with the two-year BEd. It is designed for students intending either to teach drama in schools or to work as drama specialists with young people or community groups following certification. It provides extensive course work in performance creation and other aspects of the theatre, which relate directly to the particular needs of theatre with and for youth and communities.

Students must meet the admissions requirements for the Faculty of Arts as well as the Faculty of Education as specified in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar.

A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCURRENT DEGREES

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B. MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS FOR DRAMA AND NORMAL SEQUENCE

Students must successfully complete the following program of study, which includes from 10.0 to 13.0 in the Field of Drama:

Drama Courses

• Drama 200, 223, 225, 240, 360
• Drama 340, 362, 460
• Drama 564
• An additional 2.0 full-course equivalents in Drama at the 300 level or above

Non-Drama Courses

• 1.5 full-course equivalents in non-Drama options
• 0.5 full-course equivalent in English
• 3.0 full-course equivalents of open options

Faculty of Education Requirements

Notes:

• Students in this program must meet the requirements for the BEd degree set by the Faculty of Education. See 3.5.1 or 3.5.2 for the Elementary or Secondary Route in their part of the calendar.
• Drama 223 is a three-credit, half-course normally offered in the Fall semester. Drama 225 is also a three-credit, half course but it runs over the entire year and students must register in both “A” and “B” parts. Consequently, first year course loads for the Fall are 4.5 half courses and for Winter 5.5 half courses. This will still maintain full-time status, however, students are advised to contact a Program Advisor at the Student Success Centre for information concerning their registration.
