Meet the top 8 teams
Start Something Summit brings together the top teams from four Hunter Hub programs. Each takes a different path — from building ventures to exploring complex challenges — but all come together on one stage.
Launchpad: Building tech ventures from the ground up
Launchpad is a six-month program where participants form teams to build early-stage tech ventures. Through hands-on workshops, mentorship, and coaching, teams develop and pitch real startup ideas.
FuelEye
Mike Comessotti, Co-Founder (Schulich School of Engineering) | Liam Wong, Co-Founder (Schulich School of Engineering) | Vianney Nguyen, Co-Founder (Schulich School of Engineering & Faculty of Science) | Patric Frey, Co-Founder (Schulich School of Engineering) | Maxwell Shedd, Co-Founder (Schulich School of Engineering & Haskayne School of Business)
Quantification of fuel density is a critical component forest management and wildfire mitigation, but its collection is labour intensive and expensive. Our venture, FuelEye, employs drone and machine learning technology to survey large areas efficiently, providing accessible, scalable, and effective fuel density estimates.
Agrivanna
Amirhossein Foroughi, Co-Founder & CEO (Schulich School of Engineering) | Aminreza Abbasi, Co-Founder & CTO (Faculty of Science) | Haden Harrison, Co-Founder & COO (Haskayne School of Business)
Agrivanna is a Calgary-based agtech startup building a precision ranching platform for beef producers. They pair smart GPS collars with satellite-driven pasture analytics to deliver virtual fencing (invisible boundaries) and rotational grazing recommendations — even on remote rangeland without cell service — helping ranchers grow more grass and raise healthier herds with less labour.

Map the System: Understanding complex problems
Map the System is a global competition led by the University of Oxford that focuses on systems thinking. Instead of pitching solutions, teams research and map complex social or environmental challenges to better understand how change happens.
Social Media as a De Facto Governance Structure
Aliza Ali | Amithi Bawa | Sean Cadawan | Elin Ha (School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape)
Using systems thinking, they mapped out how social media is designed to concentrate power among the elites. Through ownership, algorithmic control, and policy making, they are heavily shaping public discourse, culture, and individual lives. Rather than treating this as a technological problem, they researched the system's architecture to find out who benefits, how it's maintained, and where its leverage points are to propose a solution for real structural change.
Lifting the Standard, Together: The System of Rigging, Hoisting, and Lifting Safety in Alberta
Samantha Jones, PhD (Faculty of Arts) | Jessica Wilkins, MSc (Faculty of Arts)
Their project focuses on rigging, hoisting, and lifting activities in Alberta, and why they are involved in a large amount of workplace fatalities. They uncover the broader global system that has allowed incorrect safety practices to become the norm, and provide a feasible solution to keep workers safe and going home at the end of the day.
