UFlourish Week

UFlourish Week is an initiative from Oct. 3 - 7 aimed at building positive mental health and resiliency at the University of Calgary. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in various activities throughout the week including a wellness fair, wellness workshops, paint night, TED and tea talks, a group bike ride, and more!

What is Flourishing?

Based on the mental health research of Dr. Corey Keyes, the SU Wellness Centre has adopted a flourishing model of mental health. The key take away from Dr. Keyes’ research is that absence of a mental illness is not the same as positive mental health. Similarly, even in the presence of a mental illness, you are capable of flourishing. To flourish is to feel good about a life in which you are functioning well. Keyes identifies five factors that help you to flourish: playing, learning, connecting, interacting, and helping.  By engaging in these factors on a regular basis, you can increase your positive mental health, regardless of the presence of a mental illness, or any other daily stressors.

Don't know how to flourish? Uflourish week will show you how you can flourish with a week long series of activities aimed at building your resiliency and positive mental health.

How to flourish

UFlourish week's activities are categorized by the five key factors of flourishing: playing, learning, connecting, interacting, and helping.

Flourishing factor Look for this symbol! What it means
Playing

Playing means taking time to do something enjoyable, that’s just for you!

Learning

Learning means finding new topics and subjects that are interesting to you to increase your knowledge of the world.  

Helping

See someone in need? Help them!  Helping can be anything from contributing to society or holding a door for someone with their arms full. 

Interacting

Interacting is about the social nature of human life. By building a human connection with others you foster your social development.  

Connecting

Connecting means finding something that resonates with you – nature, faith, or an activity you enjoy! Connecting is all about creating a meaningful experience for yourself!
