EDITOR’S NOTE: The community consultation for Energizing Eyes High is now complete. Thank you to everyone in the campus community who took part. Read the UToday article about the wrap-up of the consultation process, or view a slideshow summarizing the results of all 11 online polls.

There are just over two weeks to go in the consultation phase to refine the university’s strategic direction.

“Thank you to everyone who has participated,” says Loren Falkenberg, chair of the Energizing Eyes High Secretariat.  “The level of engagement and thoughtfulness of the input has been inspiring and extremely valuable. To date, total participation is just under 8,000 for the focus groups, survey, weekly polls, videos and email submissions. This is nearly double the participation we saw with Project Next when the Eyes High strategic direction was first developed in 2011.”

A total of 372 students won a free lunch for participating in the online survey and focus groups. Friday, Nov. 18 is the last day for winners to pick up their $10 Mac Hall food vouchers in MLB 325. Vouchers can be picked up today (Monday) and Friday, Nov. 18.

There is still time to join the more than 2,700 people who have completed the online survey, many taking the time to provide detailed comments:

“The university, in the last five years, has much more clearly communicated its focus on, and commitment to, world-class and/or collaborative research as well as leadership in research. This leadership and resource focus has led to clear progress and real success,” wrote one survey respondent.

“There has been an increased movement for a more cohesive student body, and this has been evident in programs offered by the University of Calgary, such as Emerging Leaders program, and the Centre for Community Engaged Learning. However, there is still a gap in the student experience and many students are not as engaged in the university as they could be,” wrote another respondent.

More than 2,500 people have participated in the online polls over the past eight weeks.

Take a few minutes to watch the Energizing Eyes High video and be inspired by President Elizabeth Cannon speaking about the origins of Eyes High, where we are heading and why it’s important to participate in the consultation process.

Ways to engage

There is still time to participate. You can choose one or more of the Energizing Eyes High consultation opportunities that work best for you.

  • Complete the online survey before Nov. 30.
  • Visit a roving booth and record a video message. The final roving booth is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Mac Hall.
  • Take the weekly poll in UToday or on the website
  • Send a comment to eyeshigh@ucalgary.ca.
  • The last of the 18 open-registration focus groups was held on Nov. 7. Some special sessions are still being offered by faculties and departments — watch for area-specific invitations.

Special focus groups and surveys are also being offered for alumni and external community members. Interested in learning more about these opportunities? Email eyeshigh@ucalgary.ca.

Anyone who attends a focus group or completes an online survey is eligible to enter a draw for one of 10 iPad Pros. Students are also eligible for weekly draws for $10 Mac Hall food vouchers, with a 50-per-cent chance of winning.

What happens next?

Feedback will help focus UCalgary priorities and impact funding decisions going forward. Once the consultation feedback is collected and analyzed, a refined strategic direction will move through our governance bodies — the General Faculties Council and the Board of Governors — before it is launched in spring 2017.
