What is Open Studies
As an Open Studies student, you'll be eligible to take university credit courses, without being admitted into a degree program.
If you're a visiting student, you'll apply through the Open Studies application form, but you're not required to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Find out more about studying at UCalgary as a visiting student.
How to apply
- Review our Open Studies admission requirements.
- To apply for Open Studies you must create an eID.
- Complete the Open Studies application.
- Submit all transcripts, including proof of English language proficiency (if applicable).
- Pay a $125 non-refundable application fee.
Pathways to your degree or certification
Begin to complete courses leading to a degree or specific courses for your professional certification.
Upgrade or complete missing requirements
Complete courses needed for admission requirements or pre-requisites.
Visiting and exchange students
Attend the University of Calgary while on a letter of permission or experience a unique learning opportunity through a variety of international exchange programs for credit towards your degree.

If you’ve studied in Alberta, the University of Calgary will obtain transcripts on your behalf from the Ministry of Education.
If you’ve studied outside Alberta, it’s your responsibility to request transcripts from any non-Alberta institutions to be sent to directly to the university’s admissions office.
