For the 2-year program, applicants interested in focusing on elementary education (Kindergarten to Grade 6) require an academic degree from a recognized university, with an academic area normally from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, fine arts, cultural studies or communication. The elementary route of the BEd requires graduates be prepared in a curriculum specialization and to teach across the elementary subject areas. Applicants must complete the following courses, normally prior to entering the program, to be eligible for admission:

• One half-course equivalent in Canadian Studies
• One half-course equivalent in Mathematics
• One half-course equivalent in Science
• Two half-course equivalents in English (or French for the French route) Literature and Composition.

Applicants are also required to select one of the specializations listed below:

English Language Arts
French/Second Languages
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
Early Childhood Education
Inclusive Education
English as an Additional Language
Physical Education
Fine Arts

Applicants do not require an academic degree in the chosen specialization, but relevant courses are strongly recommended. 

For the French specialization, applicants must be fully competent in oral and written French and demonstrate this in an interview.

For the 5-year concurrent program, the above course requirements will be built into the Degree Program to which the applicant is registered in the Faculty of Arts, Science or Kinesiology.

All students in the elementary route must take Science 331 in the Faculty of Science to satisfy the requirement of the half-course equivalent in science.

The following program descriptions apply to continuing students admitted to the BEd (Master of Teaching Program) Fall 2011 or earlier.

As of Fall 2012, admission to this program will be suspended.

The elementary route of the BEd (Master of Teaching Program) requires graduates be prepared to teach across the subject areas. Graduates of the program must demonstrate an understanding of teaching in the elementary subjects of language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science, as well as physical education and the fine arts. Hence, applicants to the elementary route in the MT program should have a broad background in relevant disciplinary areas.

Applicants may apply for one of the specializations listed below:

Focuses on teaching grades 1 to 6 with attention to all school subject areas.

Emphasizes the developmental aspects of young children, how they learn, and how this impacts program planning for kindergarten to grade three. A major field experience takes places in kindergarten.

Focuses on teaching kindergarten to grade six in French Immersion, francophone schools and FSL (French as a second language) programs. Applicants must be fully competent in oral and written French and demonstrate this in an interview.
