Recruiting Participants for a Driving Study

Summary

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common neurological condition of childhood that has an impact on many different areas of a child’s abilities and life. One of these is the ability to drive. Many individuals with CP are capable of getting a driver’s licence, but it is difficult to predict who will be successful. We want to learn more about how to predict which individuals with CP are likely to get their driver’s licence (and pass an on-road driving test). This information will help us provide better programs for individuals with CP who want to drive.

The purpose of this research is to determine whether certain assessment tools can be used to predict whether someone with CP is likely to pass a driving test and get a driver’s licence. These tests are often used with individuals who already have their driver’s licence but whose driving abilities are now uncertain, such as an adult who is recovering from a stroke but would like to start driving again. We do not know whether these tests would also be useful for individuals with CP who have never driven before.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other

Eligible ages: 16 to 25

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

1) Youth with Cerebral Palsy (Age: 16-25 years)
a) Those who have obtained a driver's license (i.e., Class 5, Class 5-GDL, Class 7)
b) Those who attempted to obtain a driver's license, but were unsuccessful

2) Youth without Cerebral Palsy (Age: 16-25 years) who have obtained a driver's license (i.e., Class 5, Class 5-GDL, Class 7)

Exclusion criteria:

ALL GROUPS
1) Individuals younger than 16 or older than 25
2) Individuals with neurological conditions other than cerebral palsy (e.g., traumatic brain injury, uncontrolled epilepsy)
3) Individuals with a musculoskeletal injury from which not fully recovered (e.g., dislocated shoulder, torn muscle, ankle sprain, etc.)
4) Unable to make pedal presses with foot
5) Primary language other than English

YOUTH WITHOUT CP
1) Those who have a diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

YOUTH WITH CP
1) Those individuals who have had botox injections in the last 6 months.
