PreMoM - Prenatal Mood and Microbiota
Summary
The purpose of this study is to understand how the bacteria within our gut (i.e., gut microbiota) relate to stress and mental health during pregnancy. You can help us make new discoveries about the biology of stress during pregnancy and its relation to the mental health of pregnant individuals. Participants with any level of stress, from low or no stress to high stress are welcome to join the study.
Participating in the study will involve:
- A short phone call where we will talk you through the study details
- Completing some questions about your pregnancy, mental health, and diet (~20 min)
- Completing a pregnancy test
- Collecting a stool sample
Stool collection involves transferring a small amount of stool into a collection container. We will send you all the collection materials to make the process as easy as possible. The process is the same as standard stool collection that you might do for a medical test.
The stool samples will be used to determine the kinds of bacteria that live in your gut. This study will increase our understanding of the role that gut microbiota play in mental health.
Eligibility
Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other
Eligible ages: 18 to 40
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
- ≥18 years old
- ≤35 weeks pregnant.
- Living in Calgary (to be able to collect a stool sample).
- Able to read and write English.
Exclusion criteria:
1. Diagnosed by a physician or psychologist with any of the following conditions: HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C, Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis), Irritable bowel syndrome, Celiac disease, Anxiety, Depression, Diabetes (Type 1 or 2), Epilepsy (Seizures), Heart disease, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Hypothyroidism (low function thyroid), Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Kidney Disease, Autoimmune disease.
2. In the last week, had blood in their stool or a black or tarry stool
3. Taken oral antibiotics in the last month
