Parental Divorce: The Experience Among Second Generation Chinese-Canadian Women

Summary

I am looking for participants who identify as second generation Chinese-Canadian women, who experienced parental divorce in childhood. I am interested in exploring how these individuals understand the influence of their parent’s divorce during childhood on their identity development during emerging adulthood. The objective of this study is to enhance our understanding of divorce within a collective culture, enabling us to provide more effective counselling services to Chinese Canadian women.

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible gender: Female

Eligible ages: 22 to 30

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

1) Women of Chinese-Canadian descent, aged 22–30, as this study seeks to understand the experience of parental divorce from the perspective of participants from a collectivist culture.
2) Parental divorce must have occurred prior to the age of 18, as this study seeks to understand the experience of parental divorce in childhood.
3) Born and currently residing in Canada.
4) Parents born in China or Hong Kong.
5) Parents align with a collectivist culture (as identified by participant).
6) Fluent in English.
7) Willingness to speak to their experience in detail.

Exclusion criteria:

1) Participants who are not fluent in English will be excluded from this study as we do not have the funds to hire interpreters and have materials translated.
2) Participants will be excluded if they do not identify themselves as coming from Chinese-Canadian descent, as this study seeks to understand the experience of parental divorce from the perspectives of participants from a collectivist culture.
3) Participants will be excluded if they do not identify their parents as coming from a collectivist culture, as this study seeks to understand the experience of parental divorce from the perspectives of participants from a collectivist culture.
