A Novel Approach to the Assessment of the Systemic Circulation and Left Ventricular Performance in Adults
Summary
The heart is a “muscular” pump that transports blood. The purpose of this research study is to develop a new non-invasive way to assess heart and blood vessel function using principles that have been used by engineers for many years to see how effectively a pump is working. Currently, invasive methods can be used to measure two important parameters of heart and blood vessel physiology - the systemic circulation and left ventricular (LV) performance.
This study will test, whether we can non-invasively assess these two parameters of heart and blood vessel function. We will also study the difference in these parameters between patients with and without heart failure.
If this research proves successful in quantifying heart and blood vessel function, this approach could be used in a variety of patients, and not just limited to heart failure patients, as an alternative (or in addition) to current methods
Eligibility
Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other
Eligible ages: 18 to 99
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
- Age 18 years or older
- Clinical heart failure for heart failure patients and no clinical heart failure for the non-heart failure participants.
Exclusion criteria:
- Unable to provide informed consent
- On IV inotrope or pressor medications to maintain cardiac function
