The Mind and Gut Interactions Cohort Study

Summary

Many Canadians experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and/or constipation. These symptoms are often a result of GI disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The causes of IBD and IBS are unknown and current available treatments are no effective for everyone. The goal of our study is to improve the treatment of IBD and IBS. This will be done by learning more about gut bacteria, diet, and GI symptoms of those suffering from IBD and IBS, compared to healthy people. We are also interested in understanding how stress and mental health issues, like depression and anxiety, can affect GI symptoms.
