First generation immigrants: Navigating the Interplay of Cultures in Parenting
Summary
The purpose of this study will be to explore the internal thinking processes of first generation immigrants who navigate the interplay between their culture of origin and Canadian culture when parenting their children. The purpose of this study will be to go beyond what decisions immigrant parents make in their parenting and explore how, as well as why, they make the decisions that they do.
The University of Calgary Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (fill in with Ethics approval information) has approved this study.
This will be an autoethnographic study, meaning that the researcher will also be one of the participants and will discuss, as well as analyze, her own experiences alongside those of the other participants.
The findings from the study will help the researchers to understand immigrant parenting choices, as well as changes over time, at a deeper level.
As a voluntary participant, you will be asked to participate in one-on-one interviews with the researcher. The number of interviews will be between one and five, with five interviews being the maximum. Each interview will last approximately 30-45 minutes. Both participant and researcher will agree at the end of each interview if a follow up interview is necessary. Interviews can be either in-person or via zoom. Voice-only interviews are not acceptable as facial expressions and gestures may add to the richness of the study.
Eligibility
Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other
Eligible ages: 25 to 100
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
Participants must:
1. be first generation immigrants over the age of 25.
2. have lived ten (10) or more years in Canada and be currently living in Canada.
3. be parents to at least one child. This child must be over the age of two (2). The child may be an adult child, however, if that is the case, the child must have gone (minimally) to highschool in Canada.
4. have already obtained their Canadian Citizenship
5. be functionally fluent in English
Exclusion criteria:
You are not eligible for this study if:
1. You do not have either full or shared custody of your children.
2. Your children are adult children who were not raised in Canada for a minimum of 4 years of secondary school.
3. Your child has not developed any language skills yet.
4. You do not reside primarily in Canada and/or your children are living and going to school in another country (for example: you are in Canada completing your graduate studies, but your children are with your spouse, going to school in your
country of origin).
