As family of a university student, you are integral in supporting the success of your student. Familiarize yourself with the services available to assist your student throughout their time at the University of Calgary.
The Student Success Centre (SSC) offers a number of supports that can assist your student academically. Students can visit the SSC to obtain assistance on writing and math, academic planning and improvement, study skill development, scholarship applications, assistance in choosing a major, and more.
Whether you are providing funds for your student’s education or supporting them as they finance their education, there is important information to remember about financing post-secondary education. Your student may draw on a number of resources to finance their education including student loans, scholarships and bursaries, Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP’s), savings, and more.
We are committed to ensuring that your student has the resources necessary to thrive on the UCalgary campus. Your student has easy on-campus access to health services including medical, dental, chiropractic, massage, and counselling. Students have access to the Undergraduate Student Health Plan for health services while they are a student. Students also have full access to our Active Living resources including a fitness centre, rock climbing and bouldering wall, gymnastics centre, aquatic centre, racquet centre, and more. These services are included within student fees meaning they can be accessed freely while your student is at UCalgary.
It is important that your student is engaged in more than their course work while at UCalgary. Through involvement, students build positive relationships with peers, gain valuable skills, and gain experience that can benefit them in the future. Student can develop leadership skills through Camp LEAD and the Emerging Leaders Program, learn about utilizing strengths and support through UCalgaryStrong, met like-minded peers through volunteer work with the Peer Helper Program, and give back to the community through ucalgarycares. Many more opportunities for involvement will be discussed at Orientation Week, so encourage your student to sign up and attend.
UCalgary takes precautions to ensure that students are safe while they are on campus. Campus Security regularly patrols the campus on foot, bicycle, and in vehicles to ensure students are safe. Students are also able to access Safewalk 24/7 if they need to walk somewhere alone on campus and would prefer the company of peers. Encourage your student to download the UC Emergency App to ensure that they are alerted to any emergency that occurs on campus.
While studying on campus, you will want to support your student as they develop the skills necessary to obtain work upon graduation. Career Services offers students support is developing a resume and cover letter, interview skills, and more. Students can make appointments with Career Development Specialists, career workshops, and the Career Development Program.
