Day 1

Induction and the Presidents' BBQ

Tuesday, September 6th

Induction and the Presidents' BBQ

Acting as a book-end to convocation, at Induction you will hear from a variety of honoured speakers including Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, our university president, and this year’s keynote speaker, Stanford University health psychologist Dr. Kelly McGonigal. An energetic pep rally and faculty cheer off opens the ceremony. Afterwards, head outside of the Olympic Oval for the Presidents’ BBQ where members of our senior administration serve up a tasty lunch. 

Tuesday Events

  • Meet Your Orientation GroupOn Tuesday morning you will meet your Orientation Leaders and group mates you will be travelling with throughout the week. Your Orientation Leaders are knowledgeable, trained upper-year students who will guide you throughout the week and answer any of your questions. Ensure that you arrive early to get your Orientation t-shirt and to learn your faculty’s cheer! Make a note of your Orientation group number so that you can connect with your Orientation Leaders on the first day and find them throughout the week!
  • Induction Ceremony and Pep RallyA book-end to convocation, at Induction you will hear from a variety of honoured speakers including Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, the University’s President and this year’s keynote speaker, Stanford University health psychologist Dr. Kelly McGonigal.   • Campus ExpoOne of the top things you can do to ensure an awesome university experience is to get involved on campus. Take a walk around the Campus Expo to learn all about the key campus services and exciting SU Clubs that can help you succeed at UCalgary. You don’t want to miss the free swag, prizes, and activities that will be available!
  • Much Video Dance PartyCelebrate the first night of Orientation Week with an unforgettable dance party. MuchMusic will bring the DJ, all the best music videos, and awesome prizes to give away. All you have to bring is your finest dance moves!

Day 2

Faculty Orientation and Core Sessions

Wednesday, September 7th

Meet other students, professors, and administration in your faculty

Attend a special orientation hosted by the faculty that you are in, and learn all about the services, resources, and opportunities available to you while you are studying at UCalgary. Don't miss Sexxxy, a great play from the School of Creative and Performing Arts, that gives you a hilarious and moving look at different issues you may face in your time at university.

  • Faculty OrientationFaculty Orientation is a great opportunity to meet other students, professors, and administration in your faculty. This event welcomes you to your faculty while acquainting you with key services, resources, and opportunities available to students in your faculty.
  • SexxxyA favourite tradition for incoming UCalgary students, Sexxxy is not to be missed. The annual showing of Sexxxy put on by the School of Creative and Performing Arts is designed to give you a hilarious and moving look at different situations you may encounter during your time at UCalgary.
  • ConsentImmediately following Sexxxy, this informative presentation will help you understand what consent means, and your legal rights and responsibilities as a student when it comes to consent in sexual relationships. Presented by Pro Bono Students Canada: University of Calgary Chapter.
  • First LectureAttending First Lecture is a great way to start university off on the right foot! Faculty members nominated for their passion for students and for the material they teach will give a captivating lecture that they believe every student in their faculty needs to hear to succeed in their first year.
  • First Year ExperienceA core piece of your introduction to campus, the First Year Experience workshop will give you the basics on how to succeed in your academics and extracurricular activities at the University of Calgary. Learn how to successfully adjust to post-secondary learning and find your fit in the campus community.
  • Meet Your Student’s UnionThe Students’ Union (SU) is YOUR voice on campus and they want to meet YOU! Come out, meet your Elected Officials and find out fun ways to get involved on campus, whether it’s through our weekly or annual events, volunteer opportunities, or one of the over 300 SU Clubs on campus.
  • Campus TourTake a tour of UCalgary led by your expert Orientation Leaders, who will share all the first-hand knowledge they have built up over their years at UCalgary. Your tour will include interesting facts and helpful tips, directions to vital resources on campus, and assistance navigating the many buildings on campus.
  • Night on the SUJoin YOUR Students’ Union (SU) for a fun night on US! Full of games, prizes, FREE popcorn and an amazing movie! This night is not to be missed!

Day 3

Orientation Electives

Thursday, September 8th

There is no shortage of resources, opportunities and services available to you on campus.

With our Orientation electives, you get to choose sessions based on your interests. Want to learn about traveling abroad? Need to know about student awards and scholarships? Wondering about being a Mature or a Transfer student? We have an elective for that. Pick what suits you best, because there’s something here for everyone.

  • UCalgaryStrong CarnivalThere is no better way to spend a Thursday night on campus than by attending the annual UCalgaryStrong Carnival. Festivities include carnival and arcade games, face painting, caricature artists, puzzles, and teambuilding activities to strengthen an interactive campus community. Students will have a chance to meet their fellow peers, engage in fun events, and get a feel for the campus community. This evening welcomes you to be a Dino!
  • Q Centre Open HouseThe Q Centre is a safe, comfortable, and inviting space for the LGBTQIA+ community on campus. Come see what’s it’s all about, meet our coordinators, check out some great volunteer opportunities, and stick around for a prize draw and some free pizza.

Elective Sessions

Bystander Intervention Training

Bystander Invention training teaches students about pro-social behaviour, provides them the opportunity to see themselves as potential Active Bystanders, and encourages them to take action when they are witness to abusive, isolating or stigmatizing behaviour.

Create the Future

Join us to discover how you can become a part of a dynamic community of innovators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders on campus that are working together to create a better future.

Digital Identity

Are you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram? Attend this session to increase your awareness about the importance and impact that your digital identity has on your student experience and potential job search. Learn tips on enjoying your student experience and creating/maintaining a digital presence that will impress future employers.

Discover How to Apply Your Strengths

Knowing your strengths and how to apply them is one of the ways that you can create a successful university experience. For students who have already completed their Strengths exploration and discovered their “Top 5” talents, this session will focus on helping you increase your self-awareness, teamwork skills, ability to problem-solve and make a successful start to your university experience.

Find Your Fit

Through our numerous programs, activities, and resources, we provide you with the tools to start on your leadership journey, and how to grow as a leader during your time as a student to graduation and beyond. Join us to learn more about how you can begin your leadership journey and hear from students who have started in their leadership journey at UCalgary.

Get Involved with Campus Media

Get an in-depth tour of CJSW (radio), the Gauntlet (newspaper), and NUTV (television) on the third floor of MacEwan Student Center.  This session will inform new students all about Co-Curricular Record eligible volunteer opportunities at the tri-media facilities with the opportunity to win some cool prizes.

Healthy Living

Health and wellbeing are integral to student success, engagement and the overall post-secondary experience. This session will incorporate advice from current and past university students to show what resources are available to help promote wellness and find balance in your life throughout the academic year.

Keys for Success

Learn some academic strategies and helpful hints for a successful start to your university career. This session will introduce you to the academic, degree, math, and writing support offered by the Student Success Centre in addition to various programs designed to help you thrive at UCalgary.

Let’s Talk Sustainability

“Sustainability” encompasses nature, economy, society and wellbeing. It refers to our ability to meet present needs, without compromising future generations’ abilities to do so. Join us on a tour presented by the Office of Sustainability, to learn about sustainability on campus in buildings, programs and services, and find out more about opportunities to develop skills and get involved with sustainability initiatives at the University of Calgary.

Maintaining Positive Health

Our mental health affects all areas of our life, including academics, relationships, and our overall well-being. As a student, with busy schedules and deadlines, at times mental health can be neglected. This session will focus on what mental health is, how to recognize signs of declining mental health in yourself and friends, strategies for healthy coping, and how to help a friend who might be struggling. 

Mature Students

This session will be focused on connecting mature students to resources, introducing them to the campus community, and providing them with a forum to have their most pressing questions answered.

Money Matters

During the presentation you will meet with experts on awards, student loans and RESP’s. Find out how your current award will be disbursed, and even how to maintain eligibility and apply for loans in your subsequent academic years; explore the government student loans process, understand loan eligibility & disbursements; and find out how to cash in your RESP funding.

“Music to Your Ears”

Are you good with song lyrics? Can you identify bands by the decade? Do you know all the “one hit wonders”? Grab a friend and swing by the Library for a little music trivia and try your hand at Name that Tune for prestige and prizes! Learn a little about the Library, our collections and our awesome staff along the way. 

Study Abroad 101

Studying at UCalgary doesn’t just mean studying in Calgary. Why not work on your degree from Australia, Spain, Mexico, China or one of 50 other destinations around the world! Find out how you can spend a week, a month, a semester or a year “internationalizing your degree” while still paying UCalgary tuition and remaining eligible for loans and awards, including study abroad travel grants.

Transfer Students

This session will be focused on transfer-student specific issues, such as transfer credits and adjusting to the University of Calgary campus, as well as providing students with a forum to have their most pressing questions answered.

Day 4

Tailgate and KICKOFF

Friday, September 9th

KICKOFF marks the start of the Dinos football season and is an annual tradition at the University of Calgary

Friday afternoon is dedicated to celebrating the end of Orientation Week and the beginning of the school year by attending KICKOFF. Come to McMahon Stadium on Friday, September 9th to cheer on the Dinos as they take on the UBC Thunderbirds. The Tailgate and free BBQ starts at 3:30pm. Be sure to come early, as only the first 2000 people will receive a delicious Spolumbo sausage or veggie burger. After enjoying the free BBQ make sure to check out the Students’ Union Fun Zone, where there will be lots of exciting games such as bouncy boxing, sumo wrestling, face painting, and more. Don’t forget to help us break a world record by participating in the world’s largest game of Red Light Green Light. The football game begins at 5:30pm and like all Dino games, it’s FREE for students! Bring your friends, wear red, and get excited to show your Dinos pride!

  • Graduate Student OrientationAt Graduate Orientation, we’ll introduce you to your fellow students and the groups on campus who want to help you achieve your degree. Join us for the tips, contacts, and knowledge you need to succeed in your graduate program.
  • ucalgarycares Orientation Week Day of ServiceThe ucalgarycares programs are fantastic opportunities for UCalgary students to contribute to their local, national, and international communities through different service-learning projects with a social-justice lens.
  • My First Six WeeksThrough the My First Six Weeks program, you will build a foundation of academic skills and learn about important resources available to support you throughout your entire degree.
  • Dinos Athlete Orientation
  • Exchange Student OrientationSpecific to exchange students, come learn everything you need to know to make the most of your short stay here visiting the University.
  • Di-KNOW Your StuffOrientation Week is packed with a lot of valuable information but there is a chance that some of your questions may not have been answered. Spend Friday afternoon with your Orientation Leaders as they answer your most pressing questions and show you exactly where your classrooms are. In this session you will find out everything you still need to know before your first day of class. Don’t forget to bring your course schedule!
