Post Docs

Ibrahim Khan
Postdoctoral Fellow
ibrah.khan@gmail.com

Ibrahim Khan received Ph.D. in Civil and Resource Engineering from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada in 2006. He has a strong interdisciplinary academic background. He received professional Masters of Marine Management degree from the same university, where he was trained as an environmental scientist with emphasis on sustainable resource management. He has interdisciplinary Bachelors of Science degree specialization on water quality and hydrology. In his short professional period, Dr. Khan has written three books and published over thirty research articles on natural resources management, energy and environment, and sustainable petroleum operations. In recognition of his academic and research excellence, he has received more than a dozen of awards including NSERC PDA, and AIF Post-doc Prize.

Oyeshola F. Kofoworola
Post Doctoral Fellow
oyeshola.kofoworola@utoronto.ca

Kofoworola completed his bachelor and masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Ibadan respectively. He obtained his doctorate degree in Environmental Technology from the King Mongkut’s
University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand. He has worked in engineering consulting, manufacturing and the academics as well as an international organization. He is currently a Post Doctoral Fellow and is assessing the potential of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions through the application of emerging technologies in the oilsands sector using a systematic life cycle approach.

Students and RAs

Alex Charpentier
PhD Student
Department of Civil Engineering
alex.charpentier@utoronto.ca

Alex is a mechanical engineer from ENSAM Paris, France.  He obtained his masters degree in Industrial and Environmental Engineering from the Valencia Polytechnic University in Spain.  Alex worked on an oil refinery project in Venezuela, on hydrogen-powered vehicle research at a French car manufacturer, and on nuclear energy policy for the French government.

Sarah Jordaan
PhD Student
Environmental Design
smjordaa@ucalgary.ca

Sarah is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Calgary in the Energy and Environmental Systems Program. After graduating with a B.Sc. in Physics and Computer Science from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, she worked as an intern in Romania on a wildlife eco-tourism project through the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy. She has worked at Shell Canada both as a summer student in environmental performance management and in the development of their 2006 sustainability report.  She has volunteered at a wide variety of organizations, such as the Balkan Wildlife Society in Bulgaria, the Environmental Design Student Association, and the Young Environmental Professionals.

Jennifer McKellar
PhD Student
Civil Engineering
jen.mckellar@utoronto.ca

Jennifer completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto, with a research focus related to climate change. Jennifer is now interested in the mitigation of climate change, particularly in actions that may be taken in the energy sector. After completing her master’s, Jennifer worked in environmental consulting before returning to pursue a doctorate.

Mark Bernardi
Research Associate
bernardi@ucalgary.ca

Mark received a clinical effectiveness certificate from Harvard Medical School after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Cornell.  He is now a research associate in the Energy and Environmental Systems Group.  Using life cycle assessment, Mark strives to reduce emissions associated with fossil fuel extraction in Alberta’s Oil Sands.  His research interests also include renewable energies and their implementation into the public sector.  After completing his undergraduate degree, Mark was a clinical research coordinator at Harvard’s Children’s Hospital Boston. He is also president and founder of the University of Calgary Surf Club.

Jessica P. Abella
Research Assistant
abella.jessica@gmail.com

Jessica has an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. She worked as a researcher at The Corporation for Development of Biotechnology and Clean Technologies (CORPODIB), a governmental/private entity in the development of the Colombian programme for renewable transportation fuels. Her R&D activity was focused on technical, economical, and environmental impacts analysis of feasibility to produce fuel ethanol and biodiesel as alternative sources of energy in Colombia. She also worked for Bioenergy S.A. in fuel ethanol specific projects, building opportunities for investment in Colombia. It included the project to produce fuel alcohol from sugar cane in the Llanos region, in which the state Colombian oil company ECOPETROL is a partner. Jessica’s research interest is in sustainable energy assessment from an inter-disciplinary perspective, including engineering, environmental, and economic issues, and its impacts on the decision making process on investments in infrastructure and technologies.
