A Collaborative Project Between:

Univeristiy of Calgary

University of Toronto

1st Annual Meeting

The Life Cycle Assessment of Oil Sands Technologies project kickoff meeting was held on Friday November 3rd, 2006 – 8:30 am - 3 pm at the University of Calgary.

This is a collaborative project between The University of Calgary and The University of Toronto along with participation from industry, government and academic institutions. The project is funded by the NRCan Technology and Innovation Program. The project aim is to use modern hybrid life cycle assessment techniques to assess economy-wide upstream impacts (such as GHG emissions) of current and proposed oil sands operations. There was also a separate session dedicated to discussing the potential for nuclear in the oil sands.
There were two main goals for this meeting:

1. For researchers to provide an overview of the project including a review of what has been done to date on assessing the life cycle implications of the industry as well as the modeling effort that will help to inform decisions currently facing the industry.

2. To illicit feedback from industry, government and academic participants on the relevance and relative importance of potential research questions. This includes feedback to prioritize research activities and discussion about the availability of data required to complete the analysis.
