Public pedagogies
"Public pedagogies" refers to the various sites and contexts of learning beyond formal education or schooling. My focus has been on popular culture and shopping as sources of adult learning about concepts such as identity, social relations and equity, citizenship, and globalization. This topic has strong connections to the field of cultural studies. I also draw on ideas and work from women's and gender studies, professional education, and curriculum and critical literacy studies.

Work-related and workplace learning and professional education
I am interested in work and the workplace as a site of learning about social relations. I explore questions such as how gender, class, race, and sexuality surface in the workplace and how everyday workplace processes help people learn about these issues. I am also interested in the interactions between globalization, society, the workplace, and the individual. This topic overlaps with other disciplines and fields, including sociology, and women's and gender studies. Professional education in the university setting is an extension of this interest and my current research project is focused on non-conventional curricular resources and pedagogical strategies in professional education programs.

Social justice and social movement learning
Before starting my academic career, I worked for 15 years in the community-based not-for-profit/service sector. I maintain a strong interest in and commitment to a range of issues related to building more socially just societies and communities, community-based education, and adult learning about contemporary issues that is fostered through community engagement and activism.

I have explored a number of border-crossing contexts or issues, including national or localized impacts of globalized popular culture, internationalization of post-secondary education, and implications and experiences of border-crossing for LGBTQ2S people.

Working with this supervisor
I am happy to speak with prospective students interested in any of the topics outlined above, especially as they relate to adult education and learning. In particular, I seek students who work from or are open to a critical theory perspective, from which social structures and relations are explored. Influenced by feminist scholarship and proficient with qualitative research methodologies, I welcome inquiries from applicants who would like to consider and/or incorporate both in their research work.
